part 1: I'm a newbie to OC, but I'm ready for anything.

After visiting 2cpu.com I think that the best board shown there is the "MSI K7D Master L" It's a dual Athlon, and it should be pretty sweet. I basically want the best mother board for OC, I don't care about cost. Does anybody know if that board is a good choice? Also, I'm a little confused about which proc to get. Is amd 64 or xp better. And which number should I use. Something like a "Athlon 64 3500" or a "Athlon XP 3200" Thanks. Oh ya, can I have different proc's in there and still have the machine run. (right now I just want a board that's ready for an OC, but I'm still deciding on how I'm going to cool it.) Thanks for all your help. That's awesome.

you can only use Athlon Mp's in the K7d... or any Dual Athlon motherboard, (or you could level5 mod athlon XP's to MP's)
I have the K7d, its probaly the best for beginers, but is a little lacking in features, no raid, crappy audio, built in lan... nothing special... other boards feature raid and better sound, but less overclocking options in the BIOS, however through Pin modding vcore, multiplyer (with unlocked processors) adjusments can be made..
You can have different cored processors, but they both must run at the same clock frequency.

I basically want the best mother board for OC
the iwill MPX2 is the best 760MPX overclocking board, however its as rare as a Pentium II overdrive for socket 8 (nerd)

So I'm a little confused. Your saying that the iwill MPX2 is better for overclocking, but you have to ajust jumpers to do it, not in the BIOS, right? I don't care what I have to do (bios or jumpers) I just want the board that will give me the best options for OC. My other question is (and I just want a ballpark figure) What numberd MP proc do I want for lets say 1.5 ghz (on one processer) an Athlon MP 2400 something like that? Thanks.

first, the iwill IS the best motherboard, it allows the most FSB, Vcore and Multiplyer adjustments.
Second, no, not jumpers, not at all, only the MSI and Iwill MPX boards allow Vcore and Multiplyer adjustments, the others only allow FSB adjustments.

I just want the board that will give me the best options for OC
then you want the iwill, but they are, as I said before, RARE, thus, If you can't find it, the K7D Is a close second

Im a little confused, are you saying you want two 1.5ghz processors? then in that case you would want an MP 1700+ or an 1800+, the 1700+ runs @ 1.46ghz the 1800+ runs @ 1.56

a dualie is also made for stability not overclocking maybe you would be better off with like a 3800 64 CPU?

(sorry I didn't see your post I thought e-mail the notification box would mail me for any post on this thread, hence I never checked the page)

Ok, so ya I really did confuse you, but I hope your not mad. So I've looked more into the iwill (which I can't find, but it has been sold in the US) and it looks like they took multiplier adjustments out of the v 1.04 board.
This is according to:
http://forums.2cpu.com/showthread.php?threadid=20893&highlight=Iwill%2BMPX2%2BBIOS
Anything you buy in the USA should be a Revision 1.04 board. End of story.

Which is the only one being sold in the US. HOWEVER, you can flash the 1.04 board with a 1.03 bios and still keep it. But it will have auto-detetion problems (also scares me) this is from:
http://www.2cpu.com/articles/57_3.html
Multiplier issue: This feature wasn't working in its entirety on rev 1.3 boards so Iwill decided in the interest of ultimate stability to remove it from the fray completely. The BIOS listed in this forum thread is only intended for rev 1.4 boards. It may cause some problems when flashed on a rev 1.3 board (it did for me, it broke multiplier auto-detection).

That kinda creeps me out, and as an OC newbie ya... anyways I think I have my plan all set out. So I'll get the iwill once I can find it. Then I'll do the XP into MP mod using 2 Athlon XP 3200. Now do you have any idea how many mhz I could juice outta that keeping crutial parts of my board sub zero? maybe -5 or -10 C. If you have no idea, then don't spend time and try to figure it out. Ok. So 1 last question. You warned me away from the K7D and stated:
other boards feature raid and better sound, but less overclocking options in the BIOS, however through Pin modding vcore, multiplyer (with unlocked processors) adjusments can be made..
Does the iwill fall under this category? I don't care if I have to buy a raid controler and a new soundcard, I want the best OC. The idea is spend a lot of money now, don't oc, then but tubes, and oc the hell out of it for really cheap. OK thank you so much. My girl wants me to stop typign now. thanks man!

i think your missing the point here. your not gonna find an iwill mpx2. k7d's are getting rarer everyday. dual athlon systems are getting pretty outdated. you have to overclock them now just to stay up to date. that, and dual processor systems are made for stability, not overclocking. if money's not the issue and you still want dual processors, get dual opterons. no overclocking, but best out there.

and the k7d master l is only going to take the athlons with k7 architecture. the a64 is the newer k8 architecture
if you looking for the best thing to overclock, go get yourself an a64.

Well if I do an xp to mp mod, then technically I'll have the latest 32bit cpu's. 3200's. Then I can still OC them. I'm kinda stuck on 2 proc oc, just like the sound of it. But ya, I'll look into getting the 64 bit athlon as well. Thx man.

im kinda puzzled to as to why you want to buy dated hardware just to have dual cpu's..

What are you doing that actually requires, or has a performace boost with SMP?

dont you understand, its just cooler to overclock dual proc's

graphics rendering software is the only app that currently directly benifits from smp. and if thats what hes going to use it for, dual opterons would obviously be the better choice.

i also dont think he understands that 2cpu forums are dedicated to smp, and not uniprocessors. noob that doesnt want to lsten to advice seems to be the case.

Practically everything I use [eneuman: heavy duty audio processing]. 760MPX is cheap power when you really can use both CPUs. Us UNIX folks are spoiled ;-)

when I get my second processor on the 19th, its main purpose will be to folding 2 instances. I usualy run a bunch of processor intensive programs at once, a second cpu will go a long ways in response time

i know that you and xiph have reasons to run dualies, but i mean, this guy hasnt really givin a good reason to go duals over a single processor system.

i would love to have a dualie myself. but i am stuck with my dated single p4 processor system.

i do all kinds of audio incoding and stuff, and i make music with certain software.... cant wait till the day i can afford a good duale.

???? the desktop XP to MP mods work 90% of the time, its just with Barton Mobiles that seem to be the problem.
