i want to be prepared when the other parts of my computer arrive.
you are saying that can be a posibility?

I am thinking about upgradeing to an athlon xp 2200+
my question is if this processor is possibly locked or did AMD ever start locking this processor

I have a Barton 2500+ stepping AQYFA 0345RPBW
Guess this is locked completely huh. FSB will be my only recourse I guess.

The exceptions are XP2600+ / 333FSB and Barton 2500+ , wich have the 5X-12.5X range available . To toggle between ranges , you need to connect/cut the rightmost L3 bridge .
AMD started locking the multiplier on their CPUs after week 39; while some of the CPUs made during weeks 39-42 are still unlocked, all the ones from week 43 and later come multiplier locked.
I have an Athlon XP 2400+ and I can't change the multiplier. No matter what I change it to in BIOS, the system will not POST and I have to clear CMOS to get the 15x multiplier back. I must have one of those unfortunate locked ones, though I did order it from Newegg the very day it came available.

How do you know if you have a good stepping with alot of overclocking potential?
tredragon
02-17-2004, 09:32 PM
Read. The unlocked steppings can be multiplier OC'd. The rest can only be FSB OC'd.

I did read. my question was how one determines the OC headroom of a proc based on the stepping code. Just because a proc's multi is unlocked doesn't mean that a proc will oc really high.

It's a process. So long as you have stability and temps are down, you push it until you find your comfort zone.

The only way to find out whether or not your CPU is unlocked is to test it. Just because it's not on list doesn't make it automatically locked. Remember that the list isn't comprehensive, and is based on information given by forum members.

Hi, I'm a newbie here. :)
I need to know about my "PQZFA 0349 MPMW"
I can't it find in everywhere. Is it a fake proccessor? (I dont think so, It's a box one). But its overclockability is so bad. Plz help me
I also have plan to buy a duron applebred proc.
What stepping is good and what stepping I shouldn't take. I really need this info, dont want to do mistake for the 2nd time. Plz help me choosing the applebred.
Sorry for my bad english

the only way to really know is to try it and see what you get.. different components (motherboards, RAM, etc.) overclock differently...
your 2500+ is locked (unless it is a Moblie 2500+.. if so, check the Mobile FAQ sticky and Mobile CPU overclock sticky) so the overclock will be limited to the FSB only.

Thanxs m8, managed to raise fsb to 182mhz = 2ghz and its pretty stable. cant raise the volts as its locked but i read in a mag about placing a piece of wire in two holes of the cpu slot (on the motherboard) which is supossed to unlock the cpu....ever heard of this working? -----regards chubster70

post week 39 of 2003 CPUs cannot be unlocked by any means.. they are hard locked like Intel CPU. there might be a pin mod you can do to change the stock voltage, but I am not sure what that might be (or if there even is one)..

you would have been better off with a Mobile 2400+
that one you just got is multiplier locked..
with a locked multiplier at 15 you are not going to be able to get a very high FSB..

No argument there, but I was looking for cheap. I got a boxed cpu and MB for $70. I might try to bump it up a bit, but my main problem is going to be heat. Well, that and I am trying to save some money atm. So for $70 and some spare parts I have around a dead comp becomes a fair folding rig.
I mean I would like to bump it up, but that has to be secondary to actualy getting the box up and running. I suppose I could have blown the $250 for the 3Ghz P4 and MSI MB...

$77 at newegg.com and that is OEM, no hsf. So, $15 for the fan and another $40 minimum for hte motherboard = $132. This is no where near $70.

You know, everyone is all about how the A steppings suck, but mine OC's about as good as any of the I steppings I've seen (better than quite a few).

you don't do anything.. the stepping is a code on the CPU.. some steppings overclock better than others. they also give an indication of what CPU you have:
