STEPPINGS

The stepping code is a 4 or 5 letter string printed on the CPU either on the core (on Morgan Durons , Athlons and Athlons XP with Palomino core) , or on a black label near the core (on the Athlons XP Tbred core, Applebred Durons or Bartons) . Every stepping indicates a revision/change in the CPU manufacturing process , wich usually has an impact on the overclockability and on the temperature of the CPU .

Duron Spitfire:

600-800: AKAA < AKCA < AKBA
800-950: AKCA < ALCA < AMCA = ANCA < ANDA

Duron Morgan:

AHHAA < AHLCA < AHLDA
9 < Z < Y

Athlon Thunderbird :

AXHA = ALUM < AQGA = AGGA = ASHHA < ADFA < AJFA = ARGA < AXIA = BXIA = AVIA = AXIAR < AVHA = BVHA < AYHJA = EYHJA < AYHJAR
9 < K < Y

Athlon Palomino:

AGKFA < AGKGA < ARKGA < AGLHA < AGNGA < AGOGA < AGOIA < AROIA < AROGA
9 < 4 < K < F < Y

Athlon Thoroughbred :

A : AIRCA < AIRDA < AIRGA < RIRGA < RIWGA < RIUGA < AIUGA < AJUGA

B :
1600+ : KIUHB < JIUHB
1700+ and 1800+ : JIUCB < JIUGB < KIUHB < JIUHB < JIXHB < NIUHB < JIXIB
over 2000+ : AIUAB < AIUCB < AIUGB < AIUHB < AIXIB

Athlon Barton :

AIUAA < AQUCA < AQXCA < AQXDA < AQXEA < AQZEA < AQXFA < AQFZA < AQYFA < AQYHA < AQZFA

Duron Applebred :

MIUHB < MIXHB < MIXIB

It seems AMD started locking the CPU's after week 39. See the end of the post for details.

UNLOCKING

The Duron , Athlon Thunderbird , Athlon XP Palomino processors have the multiplier locked from the factory , and to unlock it you must connect the L1 bridges . It will unlock all the multipliers in the 5X-12.5X range , except for the XP2100+ and XP2200+ with Palomino core , wich will have the 13X-18.5X range available . On any CPU you can toggle between the multiplier ranges (5-12.5X to 13X-18.5X) by changing the connection of the L10 bridges (cut one and connect the other) .

The Athlon XP Thoroughbred core and Barton processors have the multiplier unlocked from the factory , so any motherboard that has the option for multiplier setting cand adjust it . The processors under 2000+ have the 5X-12.5X range available , and the 2100+ and higher have the 13X-18.5X range available . The exceptions are XP2600+ / 333FSB and Barton 2500+ , wich have the 5X-12.5X range available . To toggle between ranges , you need to connect/cut the rightmost L3 bridge .

AMD started locking the multiplier on their CPUs after week 39; while some of the CPUs made during weeks 39-42 are still unlocked, all the ones from week 43 and later come multiplier locked. The only method discovered so far to set the multiplier on locked CPU's is explained here (http://www.ocworkbench.com/2004/guides/unlockbartonwk43/unlockbartonwk43-1.htm).

What's the max oc on the 1800+ AGNGA ?

godzakka
08-17-2002, 02:11 AM
Hey, micutzu, do you know or could you list the average OC's based on the steppings, especially for the Palomino's and T-bred's? I am not sure you know this though, as I am sure its hard to find that info.

Micutzu
08-17-2002, 02:14 AM
I have it for some chips , but i need to ask around a lot to find it for all of them . Also it may depend on what vcore/cooling everybody is using ...

godzakka
08-17-2002, 02:16 AM
Right, thats why I say "average", since there are huge variations. Maybe a better question would be what is the average high end for aircooling and average high end for water cooling? That of course, just makes it even harder to find, though. Sorry, I am making your life hard, aren't I? I will stop now.

The avg ocs based on steppings would be inaccurate because people use different components. If you overclock the bus you're running agp/pci out of spec and some of the lesser cards will crap out before the cpu does. Some motherboards provide better overclocking than others. I think chong mentioned too that even with the same stepping one chip was able to get 100mhz more than the other.

my AGNGA 1800+ only got up to 1.68 GHZ

Drozdov
08-17-2002, 03:07 PM
nice, this should definitely be a sticky.

BTW, on my T-Bird 1.1ghz it says ASHHA not ASHA

Drozdov
08-17-2002, 03:09 PM
heres what it says:

A1100AMS3B
ASHHA 0132RPDW
96853550466

this chip is maxed out at 1.2ghz, u CANT go any higher.

you'll see a new stepping this week. a really kickass new stepping.

Micutzu
08-18-2002, 03:14 AM
For the Tbreds i believe . Cuz the Palominos are not made anymore . Is that for the 2400+ ?

JoeP
08-18-2002, 10:25 AM
yup. and the 2600+

frozenguy
08-19-2002, 05:53 PM
there is a 2400? and 2600?
i should get me some of thsoe!!!!!!
hehehe
hey, how do you know what kind of stepping you are getting?????

Micutzu
08-19-2002, 05:56 PM
Unless you can see the chips b4 you buy , it's a luck thing . The 2400 and 2600 are not out yet ...

08-19-2002, 05:58 PM
we have a local store here:D they had some awful steppings to..but they did have a agoia y 2000xp:)

Micutzu
08-19-2002, 06:07 PM
You'd be happier with a 1600+ agoia y , it gets almost the same oc as 2000 agoia y .

twiggy
08-19-2002, 06:08 PM
thats what i have:D my bro bought the 2000xp.:lol

Micutzu
08-19-2002, 06:17 PM
Then oc it till it burns .. :D j/k

Micutzu
08-23-2002, 08:04 PM
It's around 1900 mhz , still waiting for more input about this stepping since it's the newest one .

Wait a sec, I'm looking for a AMD XP 2000+. So which way does that rating go? Left or right? I can't tell which chip is the best. Please help someone. Is there somewhere online where I can purchase the best overclockable chip? I'm going to be purchasing from Accubyte or something. I wonder if I can ask those company to search out that certain CPU model? They're all OEM anyway. Hmmm, I'll try and ask.

Micutzu
08-30-2002, 01:15 PM
The AROIA is the best . I believe newegg.com delivers mainly AROIA's lately .

the AGOIA doesn't top around 1900. Mostly they top around 2ghz with proper cooling. the hardocp and overclockers.com forums have a lot of them.

I'll be pelt/watercooling my chip down. Hopefully I can get it to go over 2000. Using an Epox 8k5a3 and some really good memory, will hopefully do the trick.

I'm talking 1.85V aircooled here . Of course at higher voltage with pelts you'll go over 2G .

I got my two xp cpu's right at the same time the "newegg" 1600+ thing started. I have a brown agoia-y 0213 never used :) and the current cpu I use a green AROIA-Y 0220. of the 5 aroia-y 0220's Ive ever seen all on good air cooling hit 2ghz under 2v vcore... seens like now people are getting 1600+ dud's. ive seen agnga's and agkga's so alot of the good chips are gone these results coming in from (overclocker.com to amdmb.com to madonion) maybe newegg bought up other small companys bulk???

09-18-2002, 05:10 PM
actually the AROIA Y's aren't the best steppings...... According to MRIcee from xtremesystems.org the AGOIA 41F's are the absolute best.... He got a 1700+ up to 2157mhz thats about a 700mhz oc :)

:helpme does anyone know if and when the AMD 2600 will be available and if it is where? it is the first to run a 166mhz FSB and I WANT IT!!!!!!!:whailin how do you change the part where it says you run stock speed? I am runnig a little over but need to increase stepping so I dont get conflicts with pci and IDE devices, they are cool with 140mhz over clock but I am reluctant to unclock my processor as I am awaiting the 2600.

I'm not sure about your chip question and where to get it but to change that phrase below your name, just go up to "user cp" and then "Edit Profile". You can change it to what ever you want. :D
