I didn't even know that Me support NTFS.... I know for sure 98/98se doesn't, and there are no patches for it either.

If you were going to dual boot you would have to have the win98 on a FAT partition and wouldn't be able to access any of the stuff on NTFS, but the NTFS system could access the FAT just fine.

Windows 95, 98, 98se, ME Only supports FAT

Windows 2000, XP supports FAT & NTFS.

No patches r available to allow 95,98,98se,ME to read NTFS.

If you want dual boot, you need to install 95,98,98se,ME before 2000/XP. the reason being those 4 OS will over write 2000/XP and they will no create a boot log. I hope u knew that.

What you can do is to make a partition (FAT32) and make it like a file share partition where u put all ur files on there.

I did it once... I had a 1GB partition for XP, 800MB partition for ME and 38GB partition for any program files etc.

The easiest to do it is with 2 hard drives. Install Windows 98 on your D: or whatever, then install XP on C:, it'll automatically set dual booting for you. Can't say much about single drive and partition.. probably works the same.

My question is, how to dual boot Win98 and XP on a Raid 0 setup? Help:chinese:

You have to install ME first for the dual-boot to work... or you could go into XP and edit the boot file.

KoarIV you need to partition the drives. Go out and buy or go download Partition Magic, I love that program.

Since I have been playing with this for the last couple of months .... I'll toss out what I know.

Win 95/98/98SE/ME can not read a NTFS drive. They can not be made to read a NTFS drive.

Win 95/98/98SE/ME can not reside on the same partition as any other OS.

For future refference Win 9x = Win 95/98/98SE/ME Fill in the blank with what you have, want or what ever.

You have 2 options for setting up a dual boot, which you take will partially be determined by what you have currently.

If you have Win 95/98/98SE/ME and want to add XP or you want to start with a blank drive... This is the road I am currently on.

You partition you drive to have at least 2 partitions. C: & D: I recomend having C: D: & E: For a blank drive: Boot from a Win 98 boot disc. Run FDISK to set up your Primary DOS partition ( C: ) and Extended DOS Partition and set up Logical Drives ( D:, E:, etc... ) in the Extended Partition. Run FORMAT to format them all in FAT32. Set a minimum of 1GB for 9x and 2.5GB for XP and extra 0.5GB or more is better. If you are using an existing OS, then get Partition Magic 7.x and use it to add partitions to your drive if needed.

Install Win 9x on your Primary DOS partition ( C: ) Win 9x must reside on C: It will not boot from any other partition.

Install Win XP. In the set up choices, you first choose that you do not want to upgrade and that you want to choose which partition XP is installed on during set up. A screen will pop up and let you choose which partition you want XP to be on. Select D: It will ask you if you want to change the format to NTFS or leave it the same. Now is discision time. If you want Win 9x to be able to read data from D: then you MUST leave it FAT32. If you want to get a bit of performace boost from XP AND you plan on having an E: to install aps on, you can change it. I recomend leaving it FAT32. Win XP will install on D:

Win XP will install its own boot manager that will let you choose XP or 9x when your machine boots. It will default to start XP with a 30 sec timer for you to choose the other.

EDIT: If you try to install Win XP first, even on D:, when Win 9x installs, it will overwrite a critial boot file for Win XP and Win XP will no longer boot.

Here is what you do to add Win 9x to an existing XP system... This is the road I was on.

You need two programs. Partition Magic 7x (7.2 is the one that supports XP I think) and Boot Magic.
You use Partition Magic to creat a second Primary DOS partition with FAT 32 and tell it to set the new partition as active. Your machine will reboot and run all kinds of stuff, then reboot again. What it has done is moved your data around to clear a space, created a second Primary Partition and made your first Primary Partition hidden. You'll need a Win 9x boot disk for when the machine makes the 2nd reboot because it will try to boot from the new partition which has no OS on it. Now you install Win 9x into this partition. When you have the OS up and running you install Boot Magic. Boot Magic will find both OSs and then let you choose between 9x and XP when you boot.

For the sake of time and space I've left lots of variables and options out and stuck to the procedures. http://www.powerquest.com/partitionmagic/ has good instructions on adding the second OS.

My understanding is that windows doesn't want to be on the same partition as Linux or BeOS either. Never having tried I don't know for sure, but that is what I remember reading.

One thing to remember is that when you install a program, you have to install it into both OSs so that it get intered into their registries. This is why I leave everything FAT32. You can simply do your install into the same folder when you do the second OS's install and overwrite the files there. Both OSs will use the smae files and save space on the HDD.

One thing you can do, if you have lots and lots of drive space, is basically set up two machines on one hard drive. You still do the double install, but you put the programs onto differnent partitions. This will take up twice the space but it will let you have some NTFS and some FAT32 partitions, if that floats your boat.

You could even divide your HDD in half with 2 primary partitions with Partition Magic as I described before. Have one NTFS and the other FAT32 and let Boot Magic swap you between them. Neither OS would know the other existed. The only down fall is that you couldn't swap data between them.
