Greetings all,
Despite being a system builder for many years, I have always wanted to dive into the world of a watercooled system, but lack the knowledge and knowhow to set a cooling system up. Therefore, for my sins, I am leaning towards buying a watercooled system from a online manufacturer (Scan. Cyberpower etc.). The system will be purchased at the beginning of Septermber, so I have plenty of time to refine my build.

My budget is: £1,500 up to an absolute maximum of £2000, but I rather not spend 2k if I can help it.

My thoughts so far:

CASE:CoolerMaster Cosmos Silent Gaming Case

CPU: i7 3930k (Don't really want to go for Ivy Bridge as it seems much the same as Sandy, just with a die shrink.

MOBO: ASUS P9X79 Pro Intel X79 Chipset

RAM: 8GB 1600mhz Corsair XMS3 DDR3

GPU: ATI 7970 3GB

COOLING: Cyberpower Advanced WaterCooling Large Kit (Including 360m Radiator, 750res Pump/Reservoir, Rosa CPU Block, High CFM Fans, Tubing, and Coolant)
[It doesn't give any details here as to what CPU Block it uses)

HDD: 500GB Samsung Spinpoint F3 (thats plenty enough storage for me)

PSU: Corsair 850HX

CyberPower have quoted me £1700 for this system. Do you guys have any suggestions of stuff I could change, different vendors to go with etc, as I have never had any experience with CyberPower. Obviously, the expensive bit of this system is the CPU, but dropping to an i7-2600k would feel a bit "out of date".

Suggestions Welcome

Josh

Yeasterday the 1.5TB drive I had in my server went down. I finally had a reason to order two more for a nice RAID 1 config.

Specs:

2.5 Hard Drives
ICYDock 4in1 5.25 bay

250 GB RAID 1 via Slot 1 & 2 (7200RPM)

In short these two 1.5TB drives would be a RAID 1 for my important files that get backuped via carbonite (after BESR backup encrypts them)

My question is can I make the RAID 1 Datastore an iSCSI target for the Domain Control and other rigs to access through VMWare or do I need FreeNAS?

Alternatively I was thinking of using the 3.3 Target from MS that is used in Windows Storage Server.

Advice please :helpme
I figure this is the appropriate place to post this since Jason has his NAS in this section :hat

The temps have not improved.

currently idling around 35, with prime hitting 89/90

The case has an intake at the front and a second exhaust at the top (14mm).

ambient room is about 19degrees.

CPU/Mobo/Ram all at stock speeds/volts.

Q. should this H60 be able to get the CPU cooler under stress?

Is it safe enough maxing around 90 (Tjunct is 105 I think for these CPU's).

Would adding a second fan to make a push/pull on the rad help?

(sorry these sound like dumb questions but I've been out of the PC loop for a while.)

it's basically a single stutter right before certain animations.
anyone have any experience with this kind of thing?

i've been playing other modern games (bf3 and civ 5 are the newest) on my computer and never had this problem before.
edit: now that i've seen it in d3 i've been noticing it in other games, its not as bad - but its there.

i tried new drivers, old drivers, disk defrag (no idea why i thought that might help).

i built a rig for a friend with a similar setup except a 6950. he isn't experiencing anything like this - makes me suspect graphics card.

the rig is the one in my sig.

thanks for any ideas.

edit: i've also tried lowering resolution, vertical sync enabled/disabled, turning down graphics settings, no changes

A while back I started this, and I think its about time to put it up. Its a work in progress, and will be updated over time.

The Goal,

Compare fairly and evenly all major CPU architectures in recent years. Going to run each one in three stages.

First, pure stock. This will be F5 in BIOS for optimised defaults, and nothing else to show pure out of box experiance.

Second, clock for clock. Will have ram speed even across each platform (or as even as possible). For Intel, QPI/FSB, etc will be even and close to stock as possible, and the same with AMD for NB/HT speeds (2k). CPU speed chosen will be 3Ghz. Most modern CPUs are past that, and a lot of older ones wont do much more then that. If a CPU cant do 3Ghz, then the clock for clock test will be left out for it.

Third, fully optimised system. Will be ran with CPU at what would be considered the daily stable average with air cooling, and memory as fast as possible on the system.

The first test will be to show out of box performance for a non-OCer/tweaker. The second is to show the IPC increase (or decrease) from each generation. And the third is to be able to compare what you can expect from a fully overclocked and tweaked system.

The Why,

I usually get all the new stuff shortly after it comes out. So this will be an easy (and fair anti-biased way) to compare how your current system stands up to newer stuff. Also, its an all in one place to check performance of past CPUs to decide what to get if you like to upgrade to things when they are a gen or more old.

Also, Im starting this publicly now, to take requests on what you guys want to see from it. If there is a certain bench, game, program, or general info you want included, let me know as soon as possible, so I can start to integrate it.

The Test Bed,

The parts that will not change (or at least wont do so unless forced to, ie if something dies and cant find an exact replacement)

Video Card
Nvidia GTX-470, refrence card with stock clocks. Still a good card by todays standards.

Monitor
Yamakasi Catleap Q270 2560x1440 res monitor. Games will be tested at 1280x720, 1920x1080, and 2560x1440.

Cooling
Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO, it shows pretty high end air cooling performance at a low end price. Also fits just about every platform Ill be testing.

Ram
DDR3 - 2x4GB Crucial Ballistix Tactical Tracer 1866Mhz 9-9-9 1.5V, flexable ram that can be ran with speeds as high as 2200Mhz, and low timings across all speeds.
DDR2 - Gskill PI 1100Mhz 5-5-5 1.9V, again flexable ram that can do high speeds and tight timings.

HDD
WD 160GB VelociRaptor
Some notes,

When I started this, I didnt plan to do so much :lol. So at first, the results are a "rough draft". I was testing only modern stuff, and had clock for clock at 3.8Ghz, and then sold the video card and HDD I was using at that time (6870, WD Black 640), so I will put those results up for now. But they will not be "fully" comparable to the new results I start to put up in this revised "version 2". Once I can get a hold of those CPUs again, I will re-bench them. In the mean time, I will run a fourth set of tests, at 3.8, in as many of the benches as I can (that dont use the HDD or vid card).
Also, some CPUs dont work with every test, so some entries may be "NA".

Going to get started on my 3570K before it goes out the door tomorrow. If someone has a test or opinion in mind, please post it up so I dont have to try and get another one later on :lol

When setting up a business network, what are the important things to do for security, manageability from all locations, and protection from employees, but not restricting them from install programs?

For instance. They all are W7 64-bit, 7 PCs. I am installing Norton 360 on all.

They started with Comodo FW+AV paid, and my god is it crap firewall/antivirus software--one giant marketing scheme. I've watched their people from india with the same Suzy or Sam name every time on remote connection do things that are just plain ******ed when I wanted to check their "geekbuddy" service out. They literally have not an idea what the program does. They just delete some things, change settings in programs without asking you, which cause those programs to error, then say "problem fixed". Okay had to get that off my breath.

But, do you use the Homegroup, or 3rd party networking service? UAC? Guest accounts? NAS backup or online backup?

I want to set the network up so that I can stop having really odd problems with printers not being detected after they worked forever, no annoyances, simplicity (not creating 150 rules that I need to read a 500 page book to figure out).

I would say I'm somewhat knowledgeable in the PC world when it comes to figuring things out that I haven't used, most of the time, correcting most problems that a person will experience in an average time-frame, but this is my first real experience as being a network administrator. Now having the power to implement and do whatever I want and buy whatever is needed but plausible (not 1TB SSDs on every machine in RAID type of budget), I'm finding there are many things I think I'm doing right, but to someone intelligent in networking, they might take one look and say the whole network is done completely wrong. Lol. My degree literally taught me nothing as far as what I have encountered in the real world, it's all been through trial and error! Experience is everything, throw the degree in net administration out the window.

If others have ideas that sound logical when creating a business network, I will follow a lead and possibly create changes in how I have configured this network. I have the hardware side of things pretty well covered, it's the software and setup that's somewhat disorienting at times.

They do point out that the market for desktop HDDs remain constrained and will probably continue to be through the fall - which would mean that it could still take some time until we see desktop HDD prices to come down to pre-flooding levels.
