I'm running into some problems here. After reading many reviews, they all seem to have no problem oc'ing the 5850 to the CCC max, which is 775 core, 1125 memory. When I set this oc and play games, I get the ATI driver has stopped functioning blah blah blah error message and then I have to close out the game and restart my computer. I'm wondering if this is a card issue or if my core i5 is actually causing the problem (not giving my video card enough juice). I get this same issue with any video card I use whether it be ATI or Nvidia when I start oc'ing fairly high. I'm starting to think its the core i5 because this card should hit that oc easily. And since it very may well be the core i5, how can I resolve this issue? Thanks.

When I go the i7 route I was wondering if getting another 4850 1gb would be worth it since they are going for only about $80 now. OR, should I take the plunge and just get a new 5870 card sometime down the road? How would a 3 way 4850 setup compare to a singe 5870?

Or I could even wait for the price of the 4850x2 to go down and get another for quadfire.

I was asking myself whether or not 2x 5870 is an over kill.
So I read this thread
http://forums.extremeoverclocking.co...d.php?t=329944
To see what other people thought about it.

I see people saying "what games do you play" and "at what resolution you play" and so forth. Does that really matter?

After reading what some people said, I thought to myself, "how many times can you play a game you already beat twice over using last generation video cards?" Yeah sure your playing it at higher FPS with full blown settings. But can you really play a game again after beating it twice over?

Then I thought, some new titles will be coming out soon. Then I learn even WHEN the new titles hit the shelves, they won't be true DX11 games because of the console to pc port method being used. And even when the new games come out, you will probably beat the game many times over before another title comes out.

A single 5850 will do the job twice over for most games even newer ones that are coming out.

I can understand some people needing the extra HP for other uses, those I understand. But people like myself who do have 2x 5870s, OK I have it, can't really use them nor will they be used any time soon.

Is it just the WOW affect that people are so caught up with?
Reason I have 2x 5870, I got them for 300 each, it was a deal that could not be ignored. But I'm thinking of selling one only because I can't find a use for them. LoL

Anyways, just my 2 cense.

I had a hard time finding a 5800 series card a couple weeks ago so...

I got two XFX 5770's. I have never tried crossfireX yet and from all the reviews and benches it looked like they scale very well, so I figured why not? Thus far I'm quite pleased with the setup and think it's a great way to go, they put up just shy of 4870 260'ish numbers on immature drivers and if you add a second one later it performs between a 5850 and a 5870. Plus it gets you into DX11 at a decent price for good performance. Another nice thing about them is that they only require one 6 pin PCI-E connector and consume significantly less power than the aforementioned cards.

That said, at $180 apiece it's not a good deal to buy two. Might as well get a 5850 or 5870 if you can find one. It is a good deal to get one now and add one later IMO, especially when they go back down to $160. It's got a lot of features like eyefinity, DX11, hdmi audio/video, display port etc.. The limited 128 bit GDDR5 doesn't really seem to be an issue. I'm sure they did that to fit into a certain market segment and that it would outperform a 4870/4890 if it had a 256 bit mem. bus. Especially since it is so close already. If I had to guess, we could see a 256 memory bus once the 4800 series gets phased out (pure speculation). That would make a pretty wicked card.

They are very quiet with the fan on auto and would be an excellent HTPC/Game card for the living room. I also like that they don't crowd my HDD's SATA plugs like my 4890 did in my Cooler Master Centurion 590 mid tower. I like to keep things semi compact so this is a good fit for my system.

Also, I have not been able to successfully overclock them in crossfire yet and would like to know if anyone else has had this issue. I set the settings on both cards in ccc and the changes just don't register in GPU-Z or any benchmark. Any input would be greatly appreciated as I would love to overclock them. I should also mention that these are running at PCI-E 2.0 8x, as they are limited by my board. This doesn't really seem to impact performance which was a concern of mine initially. Don't be afraid to pull the trigger on crossfire if you can only run two cards at 8x.

Dragon Age: Origins in the "heavy" spots with 16x AA/AF @ 1920x1080 was night and day difference between my 4890 and the 5770's. I know this is all in the reviews but this is just some local flavor and I would love some help with my OC issue.

Thanks

EDIT: I was too quick to install them that I forgot to take a pic of them out of the box :lol
There's not much difference in the numbers between Direct X 10 and 11. Tonight I will bench a single card at DX10, DX11 and overclocked. Hopefully, if anyone can help me figure out why I can't OC while in Xfire, I'll put those numbers up as well. I would also like to do some runs with tesselation turned on.

I have been working on this for a few hours, to see WHY my 5850 all of a sudden gets juiced with 1.6 volts, and holds, untill reboot....

I left GPU-Z open, doing nothing but watching the screen refresh, and within 5 min, the voltage gets bumped, and temps sky-rocket up! Even shuts down the computer after a few min of it being like that. (Everything in the case is on still, so maybe just shuts down the GPU?)

I have uninstalled and cleaned every benchmark and ATI "edit" tool i had. STILL, same thing.

Even did a reinstall of my OS on a different HDD, install all drivers, open gpu-z..BAM!!!

I tried 9.10 WHQL and 9.11 WHQL, AND stock Windows 7 drivers, still same issue.

Now, with JUST MSI AB running, and the voltage monitoring system on, i can watch it forever, NO jumps.

I leave MSI AB open, open up GPU-Z, and within less then a min., voltage jump!! Both programs will read the jump, and temp increases?!?!

I have ran furmark, Vantage, Crysis, and OCCT with JUST MSI AB open, NO voltage increase or high temps. Open up GPU-z, 1.6 happends, temps go nuts, amperage goes up to like 20 something idle, (when its like 2.5 normal). Temps will show an increase big time in Everest, also, when it gets jumped to 1.6.

Everything i have done, leads to GPU-Z 0.3.6 doing something. I know im going to get "gpu-z just reads, not writes"...but you explain it then. I HAVE taken the bios from the card with GPU-Z, but have not flashed anything.

So, even on a fresh install...you explain why this happends only with GPU-Z is left open...?!

Okay... Just bought a new case and was cleaning and switching everything over today! I took my 3870 apart cleaned fan, heatsink, & plastic cover. I put it back together and sat it a side. Once I got every everything in the case I started it up and got no signal on my monitor I checked the vga and noticed the fan not moving... I forgot to plug the fan back into the vga pcb. I shut if off quickly! Plug the fan in & install it again. I start it back up & still get no signal. then monitor goes to sleep. My question is did that half minute without a fan burn the card up? Or is their something else I could try. Is it possible that the x bracket Isn't holding enough pressure on the GPU?

Additional Comment:

can anyone help?
