I had a X-fi extreme gamer to test out and the quality gain over my Audigy 2zs was HUGE. I could hear the bass shake allot more and loved the crystallizer. Is getting something like a Xonar going to change sound quality much?
Receiver/amp(want TRUE 5.1 surround sound): Is there a 5.1 channel amp to power my set up or am I going to have to buy a receiver? Do I need a speciale receiver to connect to my PC? If so, which ones?

So I'm thinking about buying a sound card for my PC but I'm sooo lost. There seem to be so many and I've always just used the onboard one because I've thought they were decent (as I bought higher end mobos). However I now have an evga x58 and sometimes the sound is pretty poor... especially when I'm listening to MP3s and enabling the equalizers (which before helped everything sound better). I figure now may be as good time as any to take the plunge as it were... Besides the sound qual thing I built this rig to be powerful and having some CPU time go to the sound... well I don't think I'm losing THAT much but hey, why not.

So what is a good sound card nowadays for good sound quality that will work on an evga x58 and in windows 7? I mainly game but I do watch movies or listen to MP3s every now and then on it too.

But Now I'm trying to hook my headset up to it, and I cant get it to work for the life of me.... nothing, nadda. The front panel connectors on my computer don't work either. No idea why.

I've tried EVERYTHING. I know the phones work cause I can hook up right up to my speakers and they play. But I can't get them to work when I hook them up directly to my card.

I'm using Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. Sennheiser PC350 headset. HT Omega striker card... and the front panel is on a HAF 932 case.

I just wana get my mic working more than anything else so i can use ventrilo >.<

If you were on say a medium budget build, and bought some Yambeka Audio 7.0 speakers... what would be a good sub to compliment them?

The room I've got it in has like a 7 foot cieling and is extremely long (35-40 feet?) and about 20 feet wide. The budget as I said is about average, not too much, not to little (for fun, any "the sky is the limit" suggestions would be cool too).

I want quality here, not just a 1000W woofer that gets distorted above 70% volume. Power is still important though, but quality first!

This setup may replace my audio system in the future when i have more cash, and I'm kinda just looking at brands right now to get an idea of good ones.

I was using AudioTester (www.audiotester.de) to measure thiele/small parameters of speakers so i can design the appropriate boxes. It's much more convenient and precise than the regular way of using a multimeter, so since i found it i always use it when a speaker didn't come with a parameter sheet. It worked beautifully, but today didn't seem to be the case...

I hooked up my cables as usual (line out -> amp -> speaker + calibration resistor -> line in) and hit Start. For a reason the graph looked wrong. I restarted the program, and then it froze. I unplugged the line input and reconnected the amp to the speakers - white noise coming out of the speakers, no audio programs would work. Rebooted and found "Realtek Digital Output Device" set as default. Checked the control panel - all analog jacks were greyed out. Reinstalled driver to no avail. Yup, my onboard soundcard is officially fried. :(

Tried my laptop, running on battery power as laptops usually have issues with sound input when the power brick is connected, wired everything up, calibrated the levels okay (at this point the amp output was hooked up to the soundcard input with no issues), when i connected the speaker and put everything together, i saw a spark as i plugged the line input cable into the laptop. :helpme Luckily i only busted the external mike/line input, playback and internal mic are still good, but still, i needed that input. **** it. :(

Now my money will have to go towards an X-Fi that i did not need, money that should have bought new speakers. That Realtek HD really was good. And funny thing, there is nothing wrong with my amp. I still have NO IDEA how this happened, and the hardware that worked flawlessly for measuring huge subwoofers blew on this ****ty little midrange that only needed its frequency response graph plotted for crossover design.

What a wonderful day.

So, I want to expand my setup. I had a previous thread but I tried to delete it, if someone could tell me how to delete it , I would love to.
I was looking at the Z-5500 as I heard amazing things about them...They seemed a little expensive, I could not find them for less than around 300 dollars. I want something in the 200 dollar or less range that is of good quality and easily managed. My room is pretty small, about 15 by 15 feet (I am at a boarding school), but the ceiling are quite high... I would love some suggestions of how to get the best bang for my buck in a 5.1 system or even any good sound system. I do not know that I need 5.1 as I do notwatch too many movies, but I think it is a cool feature...
thanks again!!!!
