Im trying to extend my vaio battery life, Its running vista and ive done a lot of the usual stuff like removing all of the flashy vista looks and removed unwanted programs from running etc.

So here's my question will my battery life improve if I use a lan connection to access the internet rather than a wireless connection??? Turning off the wireless seems like it should improve battery life but how much power consumption will a lan connection require for web browsing?

thanks

I have a powerful desktop that can take care anything that I through at it in photoshop. But my notebook on the other hand is old and outdated. I would like to squeeze the most out of it before I retire it. At current default specs, it is able to runs CS4 at decent speed but I want more power from it.

Here are the specs of the notebook
Toshiba Satellite M105-S3031 14" notebook
-Intel® Centrino® Mobile Technology featuring:
• Intel® Core™ Solo Processor T1350
o 1.86GHz, 2MB L2, 533MHz FSB
• Mobile Intel® 945GM Express Chipset
• Intel® PRO/Wireless 3945ABG (802.11a/b/g)

-60GB (5400 RPM) Serial-ATA (SATA) hard disk drive; 9.5mm height

1.5GB of RAM(1GB and 512mb stick)
Here are the specs of the motherboard for the memory

(• Configured with 512MB DDR2 SDRAM (both memory slots may be occupied)
• 256MB(min)/4096MB (max), 2 memory slots using 256MB, 512MB, 1024MB or 2048MB PC4200 533MHz or PC5300 677MHz DDR2 SDRAM, dual-channel support requires)

I plan to upgrade the hard drive to a 7200rpm drive and max out the RAM. The mobo is able to support up to 4GB of RAM, but the 32bit xp can only handle 3GB.

Here are some questions I have before I spend the money on the upgrade
-Should I get shoot for 3GB of ram or 4GB of RAM? 3GB will be cheaper but will I still be able to run it in dual channel?
-Will upgrading the RAM or hard drive make a bigger difference?

Please don't say get a new notebook because I don't have the money to buy a new notebook and buy a copy of CS4 even with my student discount.

I borrowed this guideline from another website. Can't remember the name at the moment. I'm going back to school this Spring and thought a laptop would be handy, since I plan on spending most my days at the university campus. I think I hit my main points in the questionnaire, but just to be sure here are some of the features I'm looking for.

1.) Super light and portable. Less than 5lbs in weight and a screen size of 11-14.3 inches.
2.) A decent laptop. Looking at the super low power consumption models that seem to be all the rage now.
3.) Dual core of course. Not sure what's good and bad in laptops.
4.) I'm being picky, but I'd like something with a bit of power that I can use if my needs ever grow. I don't expect to play the latest and greatest games at max settings, but having something to fall back on is nice.

I'm doing online shopping so I'll check back for suggestions and input on models I find. Thanks.

EDIT: Currently browsing lenovo's site for laptops.

General Questions

1) What is your budget?
500-700 USD

2) What size notebook would you prefer?
b. Ultraportable; 11" - 12” screen
c. Thin and Light; 13" - 14" screen

3) Where will you buying this notebook? You can select the flag of your country as an indicator.
USA

4) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?
I'm open to opinions.

5) Would you consider laptops that are refurbished/redistrubited?
Yes. I'd consider them.

6) What are the primary tasks will you be performing with this notebook?
School work, Music collection, Chatting. Maybe watching some shows online. On top of all that, whatever hobbies, applications or do dads I may run into.
Microsoft Office.
7) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places, leaving it on your desk or both?
Mainly going back and forth to school with.

8) Will you be playing games on it; if so, which games or types of games?
Heroes of Newerth maybe? I'm trying to stay away from gaming, but I'll probably play a game here or there now and then.

9) How many hours of battery life do you need?
I'll be plugged in most of the time (Hopefully), but realistic battery life of 4+ hours would be great

10) Would you prefer to see the notebooks you're considering before purchasing it or buying a notebook on-line without seeing it is OK?
Maybe. Really depends.

11) What OS do you prefer? Windows (XP or Vista or Windows 7), Mac OS, Linux, etc.
Xp or Windows 7 would be best.

Screen Specifics

12) From the choices below, what screen resolutions would you prefer?

c. WSXGA+ – 1680x1050; The middle ground. Again, text and icons are smaller than WXGA+, and more stuff fits onto the screen. Good for having applications open side by side, like a web browser while playing a video.
d. WUXGA - 1920x1200; Very small text and icons, that can be hard to read. Lots of stuff fits on the screen, which means less scrolling. Good for applications that require a high level of detail like CAD or Photo Editing.

13) Do you want a glossy/reflective screen or a matte/non-glossy screen?
Non-glossy.

Build Quality and Design

14) Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you?
Function over form. I'd like something lightweight.

15) When are you buying this laptop and how long do you want this laptop to last?
2-3 years +

Notebook Components

16) How much hard drive space do you need; 80GB to 500GB? Do you want a SSD drive?
at LEAST 250gb. I wouldn't mind an SSD.

17) Do you need an optical drive? If yes, a CDRW/DVD-ROM, DVD Burner or Blu-Ray drive?
CD/DVD should be enough.

==========
END COPY

Please state any additional features you need. It's also helpful if you can indicate how experienced you are with computers. If you're a novice and don't know much, that's alright. Everyone's a novice at some point.

As far as computer experience, I'd like to think I know more than the average person, but probably not much. Is there some sort of questionnaire that can help gauge it?

I know how to get rid of most viruses/spyware issues. One way or another. Worst come to worst, I know how to take out a harddrive and hook it up to another computer to run scans on it. I can fix most software issues, if not, I know where to look for answers, (EOC anyone? =D)
