Unbuffered and non-ecc

I wanna buy a ram chip and im kind of a noob at this and I have a ddr pc2100 256mb ram when i first got my computer and i wanna upgrade to 512 either by taking out 256 and putting in the 512 or leaving the 256 and putting in the 512.
But as it states in the title of my thread im not sure what unbuffered and non-ecc mean. Can someone help me ?

What motherboard do you have? It really doesn't make a difference, but just curious. Just get another stick of 256mb PC2100. You don't need ECC or registered RAM. That's used primarily for servers. Just get your standard, run of the mill non-ECC PC2100 and you should be fine. If you have a board that supports dual channel memory, you might want to try and get a second stick of the same stuff you already have. If you can get the part number off of the RAM stick in your system currently, type it into a google search and you should be able to find it.

Unless you want 768 mb of RAM, just get another stick of 256.

You can use the 'edit' button, bud. AFAIK, Viking isn't that impressive for overclocking. For day-to-day use at rated speeds, it should be fine.
