peltier installation question

I just purchased a peltier with a temp controller. The temp controller maintains the pelt temp between 30C and 40C. I have never used a peltier before so I had a couple of questions about it. Do I still need to apply a thermal compound such as arctic silver to the cpu before installing the peltier? I am using it with an amd mobile 2600 cpu. I am using air cooling with a thermalright sp-97 cooler. The peltier is 100W. With just the sp-97 I am getting idle temps of 89F and load of 113F with it oc'd to 2.652GHz at 1.825vcore. Do I need to put thermal compound between the peltier and the heatsink?

100watt peltier isnt enough to cool an overclocked 2600+. if you try, your chip will die very, very quickly from overheating. if youre going to pelt, use at least a 178 watt, but 226 is recomended

err... just to make sure, you have a heatplate as well as thermal compound between the peltier and CPU right?

yes, thermal stuff (as5 recommended) between any area that transfers heat:

waterblock - as5 - peltier - as5 - coldplate - as5 - cpu

thats the order

as5 is not recommended for pelting. Ceramique is your best bet, due to non-electrical conductivity or some such. I believe AS5 is also not designed for cold-transfer environments.
