Reapply Thermal Paste?

I recently had an issue with my machine, and at first I thought it was the CPU (I eventually found out it was my Video Card). However, I removed the heatsink and CPU and replaced it with a different CPU to verifiy it wasn't dead. After discovering it was the video card, I then replaced the original CPU and heatsink.

Whenever you guys remove your heatsink do you normally have to repaste? The reason I ask is because my temps are about 7 - 10 degrees hotter than they used to be. Either I need to reapply paste, or my new video card is pushing my processor to levels the previous one didn't before. FYI I replaced my Albatron 6800 GT with an Elsa Gladiac 6800 GT.

Don't ask why unless you want to join them.

Everytime you remove your heatsink, you MUST put new thermal compound on.
Clean teh old stuff off and then put a new layer on.

Arrow Yes, you must apply new thermal paste

Yes, you must apply new thermal paste any time you remove your heatsink, and depending on the paste you choose, you may need to reapply it every 1 to 2 years.

This is the link to the Artic Silver home page, they make the very best thermal paste's and this should answer all of your questions.
