Well, lapping it always helps. But how much better it would be, who can tell if it would be worth it. I say do it. If you have never done it before than it makes great practice.

The money you spend on sandpaper would be better spent toward a new HS IMO.

don't bother, if you mess up (a lot easier than actually doing it right) then your heatsink is ****ed.

Only lap if the surface is really rough. If you have oxidation on your heatsink (from touching it), then remove it and soak it in ketsup for an hr. or so. Use a toothbrush or something if it's bad. If you want to do a serious lapping job, you can check out telescope sites and find info to hand lap within 100nm accuracy, which is better than machines can do. Look for grinding, and polishing under telescopes. If you did that, then AS5 would be worthless though. Also, when your lapping, I suggest using cold water with a touch of soap, a couple of degrees of increase when lapping can cause a concave area (not visible with the human eye), so go slow, especially twords the end. Also, contrary to popular belief, the ideal surface will be slightly convex, not flat. The reasoning for this is that a "flat" plain (like a mirror) is actually not flat, it is a circle with a theroretical infinite circumfrence, thus making it convex. Again, go to telescope sites for more info. Although, I wouldn't suggest you do this 100nm thing to a stock heatsink (unless you really want to... or just want braggin' rights), better to get a good hs first. Hope this helps.

I have found that lapping is largely a waste of time. At best you will get only a degree or 2 of improvement, and probably not that. I have seen more people ruin a hs or proc with lapping than I have seen any worthwhile gains. It would be better to simply get a better hs if you are going to OC; no matter what you do a stock hs is not going to get you very far in regards to controlling temps on an OC. Save your sandpaper, your muscles, your time, and then save up some money for a better hs.

Only lapp if it is rough & be careful, you might want to read a couple of lapping guides.

Use Tomato sauce. Let it set for five minutes then wash off.

haha when I first read that I skipped over the middle area of posts and figured you were making a joke as to what to use for thermal paste

my friend use some tarnish remover on his heatsink and left it in too long and made it look worse, so if you can use some more organic substance to get the job done, awesome
