UPS-damaged 9700 Pro (can it be saved?!)
so a friend of mine got his whole PC shipped over from the US to the UK, but basically UPS decided to play conkers with it. He's gonna get a new card, question is, can the 9700 Pro be saved? The PCB is ever so slightly bent, and two capacitors have been ripped off, along with the heatsink (which the fan fell off). The core looks ok to me, as does the PCB. I think the capacitors can be soldered on (the grey ones). Trouble is, they've been squashed in the middle. ![]() [Reference picture, affected capacitors shown] Will the dented capacitors still work? Anyone know their ratings? Thanks.

I would apply for a claim and get a new card or my money back. It's not worth it to risk losing your investment.

UPS are about to pay out $1500, but that isn't the point. If I can fix the card, I can keep it.....

I suppose if you could find out what ratings the caps are then sure you could fix it. Although I wouldnt mess with it, and I dont know how to find the ratings. Good Luck

The caps that came off should be marked with a UF number and a voltage. Just get new caps with the same UF and voltage the same or higher. Make sure you put them in the right way (+-) or they will blow up.

As long as we are offering opinions, and mine is not worth much. I would much rather use UPS.. Fedex lost an ENTIRE rim for my truck.. the box ripped open in shipping so now one of my rims is some where between Maine and California. Then they wouldn't do anything about it. So one expensive custom rim lost.
Sorry about your buddies loss. Hopefully UPS will refunded.. if not best of luck soldering those guys back on. |

I say file a report and send it back. Lets say you do decide to solder the caps back on, and you screw it up even worse then it is. You will void all warranties and will be stuck with a crap card that you cant return.
BTW: Lets not turn this into a Fedex vs. UPS thread. Who really fecking cares anyways, they both get stuff to your house. |
