I use FlashFXP http://www.flashfxp.com/, it's fairly cheap at only $25 and works very well. You get 30 days free trial if you want to check it out.

I use smart ftp. By far my favorite and really easy to use with a really easy interface.

I'm also looking for a ftp software that I can host for my mates. Tried downloading filezilla but could find a way to host a ftp server.

http://www.serv-u.com offers a free ftp server app (personal version) with up to 5 accounts although I've never tried it myself. I think you can run an ftp server using IIS too if you have XP pro or Win2K.

[edit] sorry =KTF=, I just realised that's what you were after too...

remember flashfxp is just a client so you won't be able to host files with it (you could upload to others obviously) - but check posts 3 & 8 for server apps.

I used flashfxp for its 60 day trial...worked very nicely. Now I use smartftp, works equally as well, but I liked flash's interface more.

EDIT: Just realized your using this to host files... ...all the ones recommened above should work. Serv-u is the easiest IMO.

Proftpd is a good one for linux. Serv-u is definetly top notch, I used it for a couple years before I got hooked on linux and changed all my servers to use debian.

you downloaded the filezilla client or the server? if you didn't download the server do so.. then you simply connect to the server via the server interface to configure the server [setup users/permissions/a directory for the ftproot/etc..]
