Blew my PSU today

Hi i had a bit of bad luck today, i turned my computer on and it started to make a sparking, ticking noise from the PSU then BANG!!! it blew up. It was a Topower 400w I had already void the warrenty because i have opened it up before, so i opened it up and there was this massive black spot on the bottom of the PSU, my brother is an electrician so he had a look at it and he said it was a dodgy PSU. Do you think it could of screwed my motherboard, i took the video card out to test it and it was all good, but i havn't checked anything else cause i dont have a spare PSU around here. My brother said it wouldn't of harmed it but he dosn't really no alot about computers thats why im asking here. If my board is still ok im going to get a Zalman noiseless PSU 460w do you think they are any good?

The same thing happened to me long time ago when I didn't know much about psu's. I sticked in a new gfx and Boom!. Luckily only the psu passed away. Most likely the mobo etc is unharmed. As for your next psu I'd say go for the Enermax Liberty 500W or 620W depending on your budget.

The Enermax is quiet and is modular, Enermax is the better choice.

indeed, take the enermax, noiseless psuu's are not worth looking at: you don't have any airflow and your cpu cooler / graphics card cooler will still make some noise anyway

<off topic>
@pimp_sli 's sig: I hope you're not collecting noob statements, because I would feel victimised </off topic>

*edit: fixed typo

When a PSU goes it "can" take the MOBO or CPU with it or somtimes both. doesnt always happen but its possable.

everything is probably fine, it's pretty rare nowadays that PSU's take out mobos.

Everything should be good to go. All motherboards have voltage protection in place to stop a bad PS from taking out the whole computer. This doesn't work 100% of the time but more often than not it does.

you are definitely right. but if you have additional fans in them, does it make sense to take a noiseless psu anyway?

I got my PSU today and everything is fine, There wasn't any Enermax PSU's at the place so i got the Zalman 460W and im happy with it, I checked the cover on the back of the Topower 400W and i sore that the 12v rail was 17A lol that is pretty bad, maybe thats why it blew up, the Zalman has 2 12v rails 16A and 18A (34A) and peaks at 41A so it should be alot better and hopefully i can OC more.

Oh yeah and its realy quiet i have all my fans set to silent, Zalman claims that the CPU and the Graphics cooler are 18.5db and the PSU below 20db so its nice having a computer that is realy quiet now

Depends whether you buy high quality, quiet case fans or not.
