hmm. i show a PCI-E *16 slot rev 1.0 here. As i understand it, 8800GT is 2.0 compatible. I have tested the 9600GT in my current set-up and it ran smooth as a butter. Can this be some sort of an assurance that I will be able to run the 8800GT?

Yes indeed. 8800GT supports PCI-E 2.0, but is 100% backwards compatible. Meaning he can use an 8800GT in that Gigabyte motherboard perfectly with no problems. |

If you get an old 8800gt they were only 1.1 backwards compatible, not 1.0 but they fixed it now and I happened to get one of those cards
but my mobo is 1.1 but they have heat issues (fixed) and failing mem (not fixed) . EDIT: it should run fine.
