hmm. i show a PCI-E *16 slot rev 1.0 here. As i understand it, 8800GT is 2.0 compatible. I have tested the 9600GT in my current set-up and it ran smooth as a butter. Can this be some sort of an assurance that I will be able to run the 8800GT?

Yes indeed. 8800GT supports PCI-E 2.0, but is 100% backwards compatible. Meaning he can use an 8800GT in that Gigabyte motherboard perfectly with no problems.

If you get an old 8800gt they were only 1.1 backwards compatible, not 1.0 but they fixed it now and I happened to get one of those cards but my mobo is 1.1 but they have heat issues (fixed) and failing mem (not fixed) . EDIT: it should run fine.
