Defective Battery?

So I have this Toshiba Sattelite M-40. It was plugged directly into an outlet without a surge suppressor and was hit by lightning. Please don't tell me how stupid this is, I know. Anywho, because I had the unconditional warranty from Toshiba, I got it fixed, they replaced the Mobo and then it worked. They also told me that they power chord and battery were fried. Because those are considered accessories, they aren't covered. So I got myself a new power adapter and a new battery. I got a Kensington adapter and a no name generic battery. The batter has taken a week to charge to 100%. Every 8 hours or so it his a wall when charging, it will get to like 14% then if I take the battery out and put it back in, charging will start again. The company that I bought it from has a page devoted to battery maintenance, so I read that (LINK. Do you think that there could be some other damage to my computer to is might the battery be defective. I have a genuine Toshiba battery sitting in my shopping cart at Newegg and I don't know if I should buy it. That would make about 300$ that I have spent on 3 year old notebook. I'm not sure that it is worth it.

The circuit controlling the charge resides in the battery not the laptop, so if the lappy had its mobo replaced i'm pretty sure the battery is at fault.

But are you sure the adapter you got can handle both running the laptop and charging the battery at the same time? Try charging it with the lappy turned off.

Additional Comment:

Ok, so that didn't really work, it went up about 3 percentage points in an hour and half.

That's the risk you take, when you buy a cheap battery and not the original manufacturers battery, some work ok, others don't, I've been caught a couple of times myself and lost any benefit I got from doing it, now I only buy genuine batteries. The point is, if you have a genuine battery and it still doesn't work you can send it back to Toshiba, pity you can't borrow a battery.
