having trouble formatting and installing new os

so i put a P4 1.9ghz, 512mb, and some intel onboard graphics machince together. it has a 20gb hard drive in it with xp pro but i can't access it at all.

i have been in the bios and set it to boot from the hdd but nothing happens.

i also downloaded a linux cd and booted from it fine, just a little slow. i couldn't get linux to install because it would search for hdd to install on and wouldn't find any.

i also have a copy of xp that i attempted to install but the comp didn't even acknowledge that it was a bootable cd. it spun up and everything but it never accessed the cd.

anyone point me in the right direction? i have downloaded some formatting software that i am thinking about trying unless someone on here has a better idea.

thanks

You must ensure that the HDD intended for the OS in on the Primary IDE channel and the jumper on the HDD set to master.[not needed, but recommended] Ensure the IDE cable is connected correctly. The HDD should connected to the middle connection on the cable labeled "MST", see figure 1.1.

figure 1.1

MB........ MST.. SLV

Hopefully the BIOS detects the HDD, if so, boot to the XP cd. Insert the XP CD into the drive, press F8, F10, F12 [which ever one will take you to the boot menu, you should see it on the POST screen], select the CD rom, and press "any key" when prompted. Follow the directions within the setup.
