only 4GB out of 6GB
I'm running the same ram right now (2X2GB) with EP45-UD3L and Windows 7 64bit. |

Make sure you have the latest BIOS and verify RAM supported. http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/FileList/...-ep45-ud3l.pdf
Did you try different layouts for your ram? 2|1|2|1| or 1|1|2|2| or 2|2|1|1| Last edited by Mindwarp : 10-31-2009 at 10:18 PM. |

different sized dims may not be supported. I know that I cannot get 9 gb through the three channels of my mobo, it will swap to DDr2 mode...

Maybe a stick is damaged?

Not sure why 4 sticks didn't work, but it's quite unlikely (unless I'm not up to date with new tech - and that board isn't for the "i" processors) that 3 sticks will work - to test your 1GB sticks separately you'll need to take out the 2x2GB.

Your computer will probably run better with out the extra 2 sticks I know when I added an extra 2 on my old striker II motherboard it took a long time for it to get stable and even then I had to lower my OC because of the volts. Very few people use 4 gbs of ram let alone 6 so you are probably better off with 4.

i never topped 4 gbs ever maybe some video editing or rendering or photoshop are about the only programs that use that kind of memory. I know its a norm now but that doesn't mean its not more then enough for 90% of the programs out there. I saw no performance increase going from 4 to 8 and now that I look back I shouldv'e just stuck with 4 gbs.

I was stable with my overclock. Asus Striker II Formula Intel Q6600 @3.8GHZ 6GB Corsair Dominator 8500 (but I was running it at 1:1 @900MHz) 275GTX Twin Froz OC had that over clock as well @ 730/1250/1617 1TB OS 1.5TB Storage OCZ 700 watt I never had a problem with overclocking the system. I already overclocked my new system. But it won't post with 6GB of ram. I know they all work cause I took 2 X 2GB out and installed the 1 X1GB and it posted and went in to Windows 7 64bit. JUst can't install all 6GB in the new motherboard Gigabyte EP45-UD3L it should be able to take up to 16GB or ram. most store bought computer now a days come with 6GB of ram. I even seen some with 9GB of ram. |

So you basing your build off of store bought computers. Just because store bought computers use 6 to 9 gbs doesn't mean its a good thing. Most users that buy computers from stores think that having 6 to 9 gbs will make the system faster even though you don't see any performance increase and some boards don't like mismatched ram and maybe your gigabyte board is one of those. I've never had mismatched ram on a board before but in my opinion you are better off without the 2 1 gb sticks. If you really want more then 4 gbs then maybe try getting 4 of the same 2 gb sticks so you will have 8 but Im telling you right now I didn't see any performance increase going from 4 to 8.

Mismatching types of RAM sticks is always a bad idea.... not to mention if your mobo only supports dual channel, putting the 2 2Gb sticks in then only 1 of the 1Gb sticks is basically trying to tri-channel, which wont work :P So you would have to keep both 1Gb's in for that to work, and even then it's still bad to mismatch them. You might have to play with your memory settings to get that to work stable (2T for starters).

Don't ask why unless you want to join them. |
Some Asus board support only 1 stick of memory per chanel. I don't know for this specific Gigabyte model, I can see a lot of problem resulting in the combination of different stick. Those new board are very sensitive to the type, model you use in them. You have to try it with 4 stick of the same model.

Doing My Best to Help

What is likely happening is that it is trying to run the 2gb stick in dual channel, and when it tries to do the same for the 1gb sticks, it obviously can not. So, you can try running them in a different configuration. Without buying anything else, this will be your only chance (unless you can disable dual channel for your RAM slots...). The other option would be to try to increase volts on your NB. Honestly though, this (increasing NB/MCH volts) will likely not help as i do not believe that is the source of the problem. The best thing to do would be to buy a 2gb stick. You might be able to find what individual modules they use for the 2x2 kit, and then just buy one individually. It will certainly give you better results. As far as running more RAM as opposed to not running more RAM, it can cause instability in some systems. The memory controller does not have to work as hard with less modules installed, and to run at OC speeds, higher volts are generally needed somewhere. Either way, having more and not needing it is almost always better than having less and needing it
