58XX series price hikes expected

Anandtech is reporting that despite already low availability, prices are anticipated to go up. Apparently TSMC is having yield issues. If you were all waiting for prices to come down before Christmas - think again.
http://www.anandtech.com/weblog/showpost.aspx?i=654

Even if the yield issues are a cover, AMD does have a lock on the fastest cards right now and the next few months, plus a mountain of debt to pay off, so it certainly is understandable for them to charge a premium.

Good thing I have no money to spend right now - Ill be able to pay premium next summer and grab the best at that time. With GF100/GT300 around the corner, depending on how nVidia plays their cards, there will be some price competition in the next year, with good cards on the table for both companies. And since nVidia has the programmable GPGPU thing, it might be good news for people looking for nice GPUs, as in, ATI wont be able to compete with them and they'll have to match their price to sell.

guess I'll have to just get a 4890 or a 5770/5750 for now, or stick with the 8800gt that still gets her done

Not surprised really. Supply and demand at work. That and lack of competition.

Lol, I paid for my new rig yesterday. Took me quite a while to find a 5850. Got an Asus one ftw.

Prices going up despite low availability? Economics 101: Low availability causes an increase in prices.

Seeing as they're almost as good as a GTX295, and a lot cheaper, with Eyefinity, that's pretty much why.

They are simply charging what people are willing to pay ....

This is a simple concept....

If they were stacking up on these sites they would drop the price....

truth is you can hardly find one at any price and as soon as the tag is yellow thw are swalloed up at the egg

None of those are reasons why the price went up. The price they charge is determined by the demand and a supply curve based on their fixed and variable costs. A reduction in quantity supplied, or a lower point on the supply curve, means they should increase prices to adapt. It's an increase in profit over what they'll be getting at $380 with the shortage of cards, but it's not as much as ATi intended with $380 with enough cads to meet demand.

If there was some kind of upgrade which could of made mt GTX285 have Eyefinity, I would of dished out extra money to have it, but the fact it's included in the price of a 58XX just sweetens the deal.

Arent they better than GTX295? I mean IF 295 could use a kind of eyefinity setup. Would it be able to push out respectable frames. I mean I thought 1920x1200 was a hard res to push but the 5870 seems to just laugh at higher resolutions
