Bigadv now possible with VMware Player 3.0
Requirements: i7 processor with HT on (or a CPU with quad cores and HT) 6GB+ of ram (3600 for the VM alone) (people are reporting 8 core stability with 4600mb RAM) OC to ~3.5+ Reason for the OC is because you're not running native Linux, so you will be at a slight disadvantage there. Also, you can only run 7 cores (with HT on) stable, so you are limited there. Most people are seeing about 53,000 points when their WU submit. Frame times are 33-35minutes depending on your OC. Roughly 2.2-2.4 days to complete a WU. Basically you can expect 20,000+ ppd on a decently OCed i7 processor. Yes, it is stable. I'm submitting my 3rd WU today from my i7 VM. http://www.evga.com/forums/tm.aspx?m=4464 Last edited by DriveEuro : 11-09-2009 at 04:48 PM. |

It should run well on the rig in your sig. Since you'll have REAL cores, no HT.
Might as well give it a shot. I'm curious what 2.7ghz with 8 real cores will do. Although, I guess the bigadv frame time thread at FoldingForum.org would tell also. |

Well, i run this at 2.33 24/7 due to no voltage options available and i don't know if FB-DIMM's like being OC'd at all.
I was able to finish a unit in linux in just over 3 days though. |

Well, that puts you around 4500 minutes to complete a WU. Which is 45 minutes per frame. This means just shy of 50,000 points per completed WU (includes the bonus). Which means about 16,000ppd for that machine.

Well, i up an running -smp 8 on it right now. I don't liek having my computer on all the time to meet the deadlines for -bigadv. its nice though, i have more than enough resources here to fold in linux while doing other things! wohoo!! maybe one of these days i will change the flag and get a nice 56k point day a few times a week.
Well, i am folding at 2.52Ghz. lets see how the frames crank out! Last edited by runlinux : 11-06-2009 at 09:30 PM. |

The way the bonus system works on Bigadv, you'd be stupid not to fold 24/7. Earlier you get the WU in the more bonus you get.

man, you talked me into it... i have the oneunit flag set... The basement could use some heat nowadays... muah haha!!
Native linux is way faster for this, so i am not sure if i can make the deadlines for bigadv, but we will see. |

3:46 / Frame running -smp 8 @ 2.52Ghz (project 2671)
I am at 73% now, so i'll just have to make the jump in about an hour. Additional Comment: So, running bigadv @ 2.525Ghz, i am getting: 54 min/frame. thats 3.75 days / unit. a whole lot slower than native linux. Maybe i should just stick to smp. Update: Turns out you can run 8 cores stable. You just need to allocate more ram. I have mine set to 5120mb of RAM. Others are saying that much less is fine. I'm just going to work my way down to the find the sweet spot.
I gained cut off 1 minute per frame now. Down from 35 minutes to 34 minutes per frame. This is on 3.86ghz OC i7 920. Still have to find time to reboot and push it that extra 140mHz. |
