Overclocking help please!

Hi guys,

I want to overclock my computer, but need a bit of guidance!!

The spec is:

Intel E5400 - 2.7ghz - Coolermaster V8
Asus P5Q Deluxe
6gb DDR2 - 2x2gb 800mhz + 2x1gb 675mhz
Coolermaster 600w PSU
Saphire 5770 1gb -currently @ 885mhz and 1210 memory

I *tried* playing with some of the settings in but just ended up having to reset the bios

So, can someone give me some pointers as to where I should start?

Cheers

WIll

Basically, what you're doing is raising your FSB speed, which is what most clocks on the motherboard are based off of, like the RAM, CPU, chipset. When you raise the FSB, you overclock. The higher the speeds, the more voltage is needed to stay stable.

What are your stock temps like? Download Prime 95 and do a torture test.

Done one for about 10 mins, temps don't get above 42C

Gunna give raising the fsb a go

Additional Comment:

I can't raise the fsb over 800 which is what it is at now, bios tells me the range is 200-800?

I would be VERY impressed if your board could an 800 FSB. Most boards hit the FSB wall at about 500. Your processor speed is determined by the FSB and the multi. To get your CPU speed, multiply the FSB by the multi. The E5200 has a 12.5 multi and a 200 FSB.

Now, you have to be careful with FSB speeds, because there are two ways to read it. You either give it by the actual clock speed (low, on your processor, it's 200) or you can give the "quad pumped" speed (high, on your processor, is 800). Quad pumping is Intel's way of increasing the FSB throughput without increasing the clock speeds. At high clocks, like, 500mhz, the traces on the board act like antennas, and the signal is radiated into air and fails to make it to the processor, making things go wrong.

Your motherboard is giving the FSB by the actual clock signal. So by increasing your FSB clock from 200 to 210, you would take your processor from 2.5ghz to 2.625ghz. See? Increasing your clock from 200 to 300 would take your processor from 2.5ghz to 3.750ghz.

There is also something interesting that will happen when you raise your clock signal. Your RAM will also overclock. There is a RAM:FSB ratio. Most people run it at 1:1. And now things get even more complicated. The RAM is DDR (DDR 2 to be specific), which stands for Double Data Rate. Like the FSB Quad pumping, the RAM speed is dual pumped, which means data can be transfered on both the rising and falling edge of the clock, thus effectively doubling the transfer rate. So, with a bus speed of 200mhz, your RAM should run at 400mhz.

Now, because your bus speed is low, you can run the RAM in a 1:2 FSB:RAM ratio, where with a 200mhz FSB, your RAM would run at 400mhz (or 800mhz effective). I took a look at your system specs and it would be wise to remove those two sticks of 675mhz RAM. If you keep those two sticks in, that's going to screw up your overclock.

Keep in mind that if you decide to run the RAM in a 1:2 FSB:RAM ratio, you will overclock your RAM if you raise your FSB.

I know I'm throwing a lot of info at you.
