VM Folding lack of work units and New WSMP A3 units?

Well, I kinda took a little break from folding. I live in the deep south so our days are warm (no real spring). I am trying to get a few machines back CPU folding (as well as GPU). I have some notfred VMs still running but it seems that getting work units appears to take as long as finishing them.

I decided to try the windows SMP client and loaded up 6.29. I got an A3 unit. Well, according to fahmon I would get only 800ish ppd on my quad. I'm hoping that this is just an error so I'm going to let it role for a bit and see how it does. I installed fhm.net and it at least reported a much higher number. So here are my questions:

1. Are the A3 units as sucky as fahmon says they are or do I just need to switch monitoring programs.

2. Is anyone else using notfred vms having a problem getting work units, and should I switch out my notfreds to windows smp clients so I can at least get a steady flow of A3 units?

i noticed that i was getting nothing on my VM's, so i just switched everything over to windows SMP and i am getting about 5-6k ppd per machine (2.8ghz intel quads)

for now, i would do that.

the PPD that fahmon is reporting is correct if you are not yet eligible for bonuses. fhmnet calculates bonuses into it's PPD figures. bonuses depend on how fast the wu gets turned back in. atm, i'm getting ~1.2k ppd without the bonus on a 476pt wu, and ~5.7k ppd with the bonus. at this rate, the wu will be worth ~2.1k points. i usually see about ~7k ppd on a fresh wu, but i don't fold 24/7 so this wu was downloaded about 11 hours ago.

to be eligible for bonuses, you must have a passkey, your client must be set to use said passkey, and you must have completed 10 a2 and/or a3 wu's. you can get a passkey here.

Excellent! Guess I will dump the VMs. On a good day I only got 3k on each of my q6600s. I have had my pass key for a while and should have some of the a2/a3 cores in (maybe). If not, it shouldn't take me long to get 10 in. Wow, the bonus points are nice! Looks like I will start doing a lot more CPU folding!

dblind1: what FAH version is your notFred VM loading? (see FAHlog.txt)

I've been happily using notFred CD for a long time, but now I am seeing the same issue with getting new WU's taking forever. I did a little research and realized that notFred CD still uses the 6.04 fah smp version. Apparently there is a shortage of WUs for that version.

I was able to manually login, download the latest smp fah 6.29 and restart notFred, it immediately picked up a WU. But this is very clumsy. I sent a message to notFred asking if there was an update planned.

using vm's to fold is pretty well unnecessary now, as the Windows SMP client is more efficient with the A3 units. you get higher PPD while using less memory.

Looks good. You have to turn in 10 SMP WU's with the passkey before you start getting the bonus.
