Problem with Acer laptop
A friend asked me to take a look at his laptop as he was having some issues with it. Now the **** thing wont start. The issues were, rebooting after some use, wireless not working and you could cook eggs on it. After having a look, I got the wireless up and running, but as his OS was pretty screwed up, I was saving his files onto my external drive when it went off. Extremely hot, but even after letting it cool down a bit, couldn't start it. So out come the tools, I stripped it down to clean the heatsink and renew the thermal grease (old pc) and now what happens is: 1.Black screen 2.Fan starts up for a few seconds then stops but power still runs through the mobo. 3.The HD starts up, I have tried without the HD, the PC tries the dvd drive (so that works too) Tried with out the dvd drive same thing. So I have a black screen, can't get into the bios and the pc stops on its own with power running through the mobo (mobo light stays green, no beeps from mobo speaker and the power led stays on too, and when the HD is connected, the HD led stays lit as well). I also noticed that the jack for the power supply (mobo side) seems a little "brownish" and looks like its ready to melt lol (he hasn't got the battery any more so I can't try with that) Any ideas on the problem? Ah and the model is an Acer Ferrari (Amd Thurion) |

if it was overheating some of the solder points could of melted and no longer making electrical connection between points. Putting the motherboard in an oven at 375 for 8 minutes might work -- ive seen it fix video cards anyway, but its a huge hassle pulling a motherboard on most laptops.

As it seems pretty dead, I might try that, I had the heatsink off today and there are 3 things cooled by it, cpu and the 2 others must be NB and vga. Not sure which one it was, but one of them doesnt have thermal paste but a sort of "pad" that is like a chip of cement.
I don't think it is meant to be like that lol |
