Ipad - Opinions for a cynic anyone?

I've got a fast laptop, an android phone and a good pc. Dislike walled gardens, Itunes and (what I perceive as) Apple's authoritarian approach.

However, the new Ipad has a selling point that is quite important to me. The resolution and quality of the screen.

I've a LOT of pdf digital books and Kindle books. Now I'm hunting through them constantly teaching myself computer science from the small (bits, algorithms, programming styles) to the large-design and architecturel patterns, software development practices. In between I've books on specific techniques and technologies. The most important ones I've also got as real books-all over the house!

Anyway, reading and hunting down Wiki entries for words I just don't know and ideas I've to relearn is the main point. Along with Pluralsight training videos.

Would narrow minded ness be depriving me of a tool that will make a difference for this, in the humble opinion of anyone here: Mac lover or not .

Worth it or high quality white elephant, given I'm not a Mac lover?

Better alternatives-without compromising screen?

Asus is about to launch a 1920x1200 tab, not quite as high is the iPad but still awesome. And I much prefer the flexibility the Android ICS has to offer. That would be a good compromise. The super IPS 1280x800 panel on the Prime isn't high res but it still looks awesome. I wish I had waited for the infinity.

Thank you. Worth knowing!

Additional Comment:

Bottom end 3rd gen. Its very very good on the eyes. For my needs-ideal.

Additional Comment:

Well, mini review. I'm fast on a pc, slow on a touch phone like android and in between on the iPad.

If you have my requirements buy one. I disliked Apple however this is a fine piece of work. All my PDF books are very pleasurable to read. The screen is fantastic. The quality is high. The battery is excellent and with only a little persistence the facilities very useable.

Gripes: repeated password entry for the app store, no low level file search access, no ms office. First is a pain, second is minor, third is a moot need at best.

Tips: use Dropbox, setup iTunes on pc and learn the simple add files to library trick, buy the base ram model and no 4g-use your phone and tether it. Base ram is enough unless you must carry gigabytes of movies and mp3s. Note I am not a gamer.

Why buy?

Bloody convenient and very high quality reading, studying tool.
