you guys are Jerks! not saying to do dumb stuff to it, but if it were me I'd run it with the cover off, monitor the temps, and try to OC the video card a bit. When I was young and didnt have the money to do some things, thats what I did based off advice from people here. So long as he keeps the temps down, he should see what he can get out of it to hold him over.

Why am I a jerk?? I offered a better Gpu if he breaks the 8400.....

Not worth the time. He's already worried about the PSU. He has a stock system that doesn't get OC'ed (GPU) often. He plays old games.

The 8400 gains nothing from over clocking. What's it got? 25 cuda cores? I know it has like 6.4 gb/s memory bandwidth. That's enough to display this web page....

Me too.
I try for maximum performance on every piece of hardware I own, regardless. That's what an overclocker does.

Haha. I just read yesterday you just broke a card. Where you going to mention that part?

Your in Wis. My neighbor. If you need a decent card for pretty much dirt cheap, drop me a PM. I've got a few cards here, if you don't have $$ for something new.

Job hazard. Sometimes it happens. As a bencher, you know this.
I got a whole box of busted crap. Accumulated from years of benching.

I think it should be on the page when you register. If you join the "extreme" overclocking forum then shy away from overclocking you get your man card pulled.

Also it was more of a friendly joking jerk then an actual insult.

Jerk.

Heh It's running 1680 x 1050... and I average 30-some fps in UT2004 Torlan map (the current card has 1024mb of onboard sheep). I know the settings for Portal is turned way down just so I can run it.

That el cheapo videocard doesn't get hot at all due to the extra cooling, I can touch the heatsink and it only feels warm after hours of use. Vcore adjustments are scary tho because having a crap-o-matic videocard is better than not having one at all I already went through one videocard (also a 8400gs but a crappier one, heatsink fan died without me knowing and the gpu cooked itself like at the end of Terminator 2 except it gave me the finger instead of a thumbs up).

Yep.. just a single thread halved over two cores. Not sure if you're playing online or local. A trick we used back in the day for LAN was to run a dedicated server off one core and play from the other. Really made a difference when adding all the bots... especially with demanding mutators like WoE. Set affinity in task manager.. the server would be run on cpu 0 and game cpu 1. If you're playing online then try setting affinity to cpu 1.

You might want to take a look in the FS section for some cheap parts. Cecil has some really nice cheap mobo's. I also saw a 9800gt pretty cheap. You can use your cpu and ram, hdds, etc. I have plenty spare psu's and cases laying around if you need anything.

I've got an 8500. No fan, single slot. It's not much better than you 8400GS.

If I had only that to game on, I'd be crying. Seriously.
