Which Console Media Center Container

I just got my new TV for my entertainment system, so I spend a lot more time out in the living room where my Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 are. I finally want to do something about my DVD and BluRay rips though that stream through either the Playstaion or the Xbox via PS3 Media Server. So my question to the community is, what would be the best codec / container to convert my rips to and is there any recommendations on media streaming software?

My ideal media streaming software and codec / container would allow me to use the subtitle features (on / off) and select languages, as I watch a lot of anime, if this feature is possible.

Thank You,
l_lNOXl_l

Additional Comment:

^ Bump.

Just to see if anyone can help me here one last time.

After I've ripped movies from disc I usually convert them to an H264 .mp4 using Handbrake as this combination seems to work on pretty much everything.

Failing that .mkv is also a widely used container.

As far as streaming software, I just use Windows Media Centre.

If you watch a lot of anime, I'm guessing you're going to be running into a lot of MKV files. I stream to my PS3 using Universal Media Server (Same as PS3 Media Server, I just find it more stable).

What I do to play high bitrate/HD files is so turn off 'A/V sync alternative method' and turn off 'Remux videos with tsMuxeR when possible instead of transcoding'
Those along with a direct Ethernet cable allows me to watch HD videos no problem.

I found wifi too unstable and since the PS3 has a crappy wireless card that can only use Wireless G, HD videos skip a lot.

You and I must talk some time if you want to fix this. With an N class wireless network you should see no such issue when properly configured. I have absolutely no issues with mine and HD content. However I have never tried to stream through my PS3 in this mannor

I stream to my PS3 (I don't have a XBOX) with PS3 media server from my WHS 2011. I just recently find out how to run the PS3 media server from the WHS 2011. Before going back to the PS3 media server I was using Serviio media server. In my experience the PS3 does not like the .mkv container. I encode to either .M2TS or like Sysigy to .mp4. I have been trying to figure out how to encode subtitles in to the .M2TS, so far I have not had any luck. Maybe someone on here knows how and will share their knowledge.

My PS3 is connected to my home network with Ethernet cable. The cheap *** wireless G card in the PS3 is a joke. I will look at the Universal media server again. Now that I have PS3 media server running the Universal should be the same to set up.

I run windows media center and in the other room use my xbox360 as a media center extender. If you are going to be using this as your primary TV I would highly recommend just building yourself a media center pc and forget messing with the consoles.
