Very much a low budget build and a iffy power supply choice, that cpu will encode video and edit video, but it depends what you mean by editing, I see little difference with this build and going down to your local store and buying a oem computer.
I do a lot of video encoding on a laptop with a duo 2 and get 72 fps with the majority of AVI files. Mkv's are a lot slower at about 40, so basically you can do it, if your video includes rendering of any kind you'll be struggling. I be looking to up the ante a bit, just to make it worthwhile. |

What kind of video editing are you doing? If it's HD then you'd be better off with a quad core, also try going for 8GB RAM, with Adobe After Effects I can reach my 4GB limit within seconds of things like warp stabilization.

without knowing your budget or the level of video encoding your gonna do its hard to recomend, so I'll talk in generals. Your about $300 off of a decent motherboard, a 2500k, and some decent 8gb kit of ram.
That may sound like a large difference on a build so cheap to start off with, but the new rig would take the old rig, punch it in the teath, then start curb stomping its face when it hits the ground. Then when its done, your left with the ability to overclock it, so then the new rig takes out a .45 and finishs your other rig off. If it were me, i would have a hard time telling someone to go with the rig you recomended unless I absolutely had to. If they had a functional computer I would tell them to deal with it just a little longer and save the money. Your going to use it for years, its a drop in the bucket for price to performance over time. |

If budget is a concern - I'd even venture into looking at AMD multi-core chips vs the i5.
Might get a bit more bang per buck there - but that's just a thought because I really have very little experience with AMD's lineup. All I can say is the minute you said "video editing" and put down the cheapest available Intel CPU, I knew this was going to be a bad one. Video editing and i7 CPU's go hand in hand. |

ya, CPU and PSU are pretty week in that lineup. I'd try to find some more budget somewhere for both of those if you can.

The FX4100 is a very good CPU for the money when it comes to raw power after overclocking potential. It can easily be brought to 4.5GHz, and for a sub-$100 CPU, it is a steal for the performance it delivers.

http://www.anandtech.com/show/4083/t...-2100-tested/9 I say 2500K is enough for gaming, and get a Z68 board for the encoding using Quick Sync. |
