Sandisk Extreme 480GB SATA 6.0Gb/s - $379.99

At your local Micro Center for $379.99 480GB SSD:

(corrected spelling, thx Odanez)
Sandisk Extreme SDSSDX-480G-G25 480GB SATA 6.0Gb/s 2.5" Internal Solid State Drive

http://www.microcenter.com/single_pr...uct_id=0382701

I placed my online reservation by adding to my cart using the cart button. Hopefully 1 of the 5 was for me cause I returned to the page and the cart button was dimmed out and now is out of stock. Got an email notifier at 2:00AM of the great buy.

Boy... great deals sure vanish quickly. Check out your local MC if they have any left.

As I saw "scandisk" I was like wait what?

But good price for 480GB nevertheless, however sandforce, so I would be sceptical. Too bad the offer does not exist anymore

Haha, sorry for the error ... Sandisk. Ummm, that tone does not sound good about the sandforce. Please elaborate. I've been waiting for SSD prices to go below $1 a gig for drives greater than 256GB. Saw this one and thought it fit the bill.

Odanez... tell me, is this a quality SSD or not? I just reserved it and did not pay for it yet so please save me the pain if you think this is not a good one. Thanks!

I personally do not know if it's a good one or not - the name "Sandforce" has just left a negative impact on the SSD market in general, when it comes to reliability. The older Sandforce drives are much more prone to cause problems (complete failures of the drive usually), but apparently the new Sandforce controller has not quite yet gotten rid of all of its problems. Ok it's often not the controller's fault, e.g. OCZ Sandforce SSDs have many more problems than say Intel Sandforce SSDs, but still - drives with the Marvell controller like the Crucial M4 or Intel 510 (and a few others) have proven to be just about the most reliable controller out there. Also the currently good price of the Crucial M4's makes it the #1 option.

Also with the scandisk remark, scandisk is a software to scan your disk, the manufacturer is called sandisk (and makes the best SD cards when it comes to reliability, so the might be good even though they're using Sandforce)

Odanez... I see. Hmmm, glad I didn't pull the trigger and pay for it. Will seriously consider Newegg price of the 512GB at 399.99 (no tax) Odanez, take a look at Newegg's review of the M4 512GB SSD. As recent as April of this year, some of the drives are dead. What's that all about?

I don't want my first SSD to be flawed. Well for the Sandforce users out there... here's a nice local deal

I have no issues at all with my Sandforce-based Corsair Force 3 60GB, I think it's blown out of proportions, but it depends on the brand's capacity to produce good firmwares. OCZ sucks at that, hence their reliability reputation.

Interesting - the 512GB does seem to have slightly worse reviews than the others, wonder what that is all about? Theoretically they should all show similar reliability figures, maybe the number of bad reviews is just an anomaly. Also I would not trust newegg reviews too much.

Maybe there's more info on the 512GB drives, whether they really do fail more than the smaller ones.

Thanks Nagoshi... good to know. Prices are going down all over place so a win for all.

Yeah, Newegg has gone down in the credibility of reviews but sure does not sit well. Let me know what you find out. Going home now

Could not find anything conclusive (yet) - but for those who had their drive fail had it fail within a few weeks or months, well within the warranty period, so IF it happens to you you can just get a new one.

So true. Sandisk have solid SD and CF card quality and if I was Brand loyal, this Micro Center price is a fantastic deal for $379.99 even with tax in Ohio. Neweggs price is currently $479 for this ssd.

Thanks for the comments!

Additional Comment:

Interesting review on the Sandisk 480GB SSD (6/5/12):

Additional Comment:

Well, I went ahead and picked up my reserved Sandisk 480gb SSD from Micro Center for $379. This is my first SSD, too

I'll post my install in my latest project from earlier this year. Cheers!
