now can not connect to any website

So grandfather calls me over to help him get back on the internet. So here is the set up. A router with a dsl wire in then ethernet to a wireless linksys router that is wireless g. Both read they have internet. Go downstairs to his laptop, which is a acer travelmate 2480. Windows vista and a celeron M. Try connecting to linksys (no security network). No joy, i get local connection only. What should I do? It is extremely slow so I am running malwarebytes on it then gonna go to mess with firewall settings. But any other ideas?

UPDATE: So I got rid of MACAFEE (or however you spell it). Turned off all security options to see if I can even get on. Well, I got it to where vista says I have local and internet. So go on internet explorer and type in google. I get an error HTTP 404 not found. Tried a few more times with different websites to no avail. So then I pinged google and I get response. So now I am at a loss lol
Any suggestions?

See if the IP address has been fiddled with.

Reset the network in Vista.

Do you get internet with any other computer beside his?

IE?

Tools -> Internet Options -> Connection -> LAN options

See if there's anything setup, like a proxy or something.

Also check with cmd to see if you really do have access to internet -- ping google and see if you get a response.

Is it just with IE, or does it do with other browsers?

If it still happens in chrome, then it's either:

1. Your NIC is going out
2. Your router

Check that out.
