FPS Low in Arma:OA??

Hey all,

I have a friend whos computer is a Intel G620 CPU with 2 gb memory and a Asus P8Z68 Mobo..with a 460GTX..on win XP PRo

Now we play ArmA:OA alot and when he first got the PC it was getting arounf 55FPS. but last night while playing a mission the FPS where at 15-17FPS??

WE thought it might have been a heat issue but the temps where normal about 50c CPU and 38c GPU.. The GPU Was hardly breaking a sweat..

We are a little bit wondering WTH Was going on and why wah the FPS so low. the night before same map the FPS where about 45 but for some reason the where steady around 15FPS..

What could cause such a drastic Drop in FPS on the same map?? when before the FPS where fine?? he has most settings on normal and we tried changing the settings on the fly but it still stayed at 15fps..

It depends on what you are trying to render at the time. For example if you are rendering an area on the same map where there is a lot of smoke then you may lag much more due to the smoke effects than you would on other parts of the map. The same may be true with Fire as it casts extra shadows that have to be processed etc...

Having purchased ArmaII for the DayZ mod, I can say that it is not very efficient. I have a brand new top of the line system and I still have to run it on a single monitor with most of the settings turned down.

well basically it is just a map with no smoke or fires we are in area with some desert and some trees but not too many as to cause a slowdown..we ran the same map last time and he was getting 45fps but last night they started fine but then as we went on the FPS dropped to 15FPS on the same map not much besides the basic game was being rendered.. it should not have dropped so drastically..

Well there may be something wrong with your system?? I have a i5 with 2 480 GTX run triplescreen and in 3D on High settings runs fine for me about 70-80FPS??

I have actually found that turning some settings up actually increases my FPS. I dont recall them all, but I know turning up video memory really seemed to help.

Is this a dedicated server? Server FPS WILL contribute to your client side FPS.

well further investigation it appears the FPS DRop when he plays any game after a hour or two the Frames tank..

he has XP with an intel G620 Socket 1155..4gb ram with a nvidia 460GTX..we checked DX with DXDiag and that reported No problems..
I do NOT know what would cause such behavior but there is NO HEAT issues the CPU gets to about 52C and the vid card to 45C under load..

edit. Well it is now happening to me as well.. I wonder if the BETA Patch screwed something up.. I hope not Arma2 full install takes about 40-60mins..

XP on a modern system Get 7 on there!

As for the beta, which one are you running? The actual 95054 beta, or the RC's?

I know for Day Z, those RC's have been nothing but trouble.

You're right, too, ARMA install sucks badly. My advice is to backup the entire folder if you do a major update (like to an RC/1.6 to 1.61).

well i told him to get 7 but he wants to run XP for some strange reason..

Now to the issue it was happening in WoW also the FPS tanked to around 7fps.. Now this is getting to wierd am infected with some wierd FPS bug??

Now his sytem is a lil slower but was getting near the same FPS as I am. Now my system is more then capable in sig.. This is just having me concerned we have some sort of Bug..

I know for sure I am NOT having heat issues or the like.. the system is NOT even under a full load whilst running the games..

Now If I reboot it may be fixed for a bit but in an hour or two the FPS will tank what could cause that??

Is he running different settings than you are? If you run out of vRam that would be the expected behavior, so if he's simply pushing his vRam usage higher he may run into this issue while you do not.

Urbanfox also had a good suggestion, go through and clean out the system.

Another thing to try is running task manager and next time it spikes like that check and see if anything is jumping up in usage other than your game. This works best if you have a second monitor you can watch the process monitor on. You can also use GPUz to watch what your GPU is doing at the time.

well I think I Figured out my problem.. My GPU was being throttled for some wierd reason I think My OC on the GPU was too high??

It is a eVGA 480GTX and had it set at 800 but it always worked at the clock speed before why now is it a problem??

I declocked it to 775mhz and it seems to run that speed in furmark NP's withput it being declocked??

I hope I did NOT have the OC too high on my GPU and broke something??

Additional Comment:

My guess is it degraded over time from the OC.

Not necessarily. Was the voltage tweaked before? How long have you had it and how long was it OC'd? Are temps in check? I just noticed you said 38c GPU temp, seems AWFULLY low for a 480.
