Crc errors and freezing, looks like there's a problem with the drive. When you remove the drive from the PC, is everything back to normal, you might have to do a cold boot to get the PC back to running normally, you could try it in a external usb enclosure or a docking station and see if it still freezes, might run long enough to get most of your data off.
CRC errors aren't always fatal, could be caused by corrupt files, freezing usually a hardware problem, can be caused by the computer, by a faulty sata lead or the drive itself. I have a 1TB drive that freezes the computer, but only if you try to access the files in the bad sector, otherwise it runs ok, tried Chkdsk on it and it freezes, tried testing the drive and the software also freezes, the drives a bin job as far as I'm concerned. Back-up if you can and as a final test try formatting the drive, usually if that fails it's had it. Problem with a clean format, with win7, it's low level and takes hours, win XP would be better, a full format with XP is not low level, just marks individual sectors headers as empty, when it reaches the bad area the format usually fails if the drives faulty. When I first used Vista, I did a clean format on a 500gb drive, because it was low level. it took all night, brought my xp habits with me. You can try software like Spinrite, it would probably be almost as cheap replacing the drive and I doubt it will fix this drive, but that's up to you. |

Up to you, Spinrite costs money, I don't believe it will fix this drive, if you already have it by all means try it. I owned the software, but found in 99% of cases it wasn't much use anyway, other people swear by it. Best of luck with the drive, I've lost a couple of drives myself recently, not what they used to be.

WD has always been my favorite HDD but I've had a lot of problems with them lately. I bought a pair of WD 750 Blacks that have been nothing but trouble and the HD 500 Black in my wife's rig just crapped out on me. I guess if I only use WD, then only WD will fail on me, but that seems like a lot. I hope it was just chance.

Way of life these days, had trouble with Samsungs, luckily just a odd drive, got a lot of Seagates and Wd for storage, got a WD blue that may have problems, not sure at this point, I keep a treble back-up so bad drives aren't a problem, except the cost of replacing them. Sadly Quality isn't what it was.

Well the problems obviously with your own computer, I'd start by replacing sata lead you were using, maybe the connector you were using is faulty, I'd say it's probably the lead, just got to track down exactly what the problem is. CRC problems and freezing can be caused by other means, it's always advisable to test the drive on another computer, it eliminates a lot of possible problems.

There's something causing the drive not to operate properly on the computer. So your no longer trying to trace the problem.

I doubt it's anything to do with memory and more to do with the sata buss in some way, that's assuming the info you've given is correct, no offense meant by that but it's easy to come up with the wrong cause of the problem. Best of luck tracing the problem.
