Star Wars: The Old Republic Going Free-to-Play

http://www.ign.com/articles/2012/07/...g-free-to-play

Star Wars: The Old Republic Going Free-to-Play
Play up to 50 and with all the original race and class combinations.

Quote:
Star Wars: The Old Republic will add a free-to-play option this Fall. Those who opt to play for free will have access to all the story content for all eight classes, and will be able to level a character all the way up to the current cap of 50. Some content will be restricted, though, and will only be attainable through paying a monthly subscription fee of $14.99 or using an upcoming in-game currency called "Cartel Coins" to make purchases (subscribers also get monthly allotments of Cartel Coins).

Paid content is said to include new high level content, new features and unlimited access. While free players will be able to access all the story content, they'll have to pay to access new content, as well as get additional bank slots and get unlimited plays in PvP warzones. Players who only play for free will be able to jump in warzones weekly, but only a few times before they're locked out of the content and asked to pay. Subscribers will have unlimited access to warzones.
Well, it finally happened.

Yep, probably the best bet to keep the game active in the long term. While SW fans will shell out for the title, many others dont like monthly fee's. A f2p system with an ingame store for extra content is the best way forward to keep the playerbase up.

I will definately take a look at the game in the fall with a f2p account. If its good, I will consider paying for extra content. So the idea is already working.

Yay! I now have a reason to get my last level! I quit playing at level 49 to justify the savings to buy Diablo III

SW:Tor was one of the best RPG's I have played in a while, it was also however the worst MMO. They would need to pay me to get me to come back. The bad taste Ilum and post level 50 in general left in my mouth won't soon fade.

I personally find GW2 to be a far superior play experience. WvWvW is something that will hold me for a long time to come.

I will still never play it. I will be engrossed in GW2 and will have no desire to play a clone of wow with lightsabers.

Never played it, I really can't be bothered with MMO's anymore, as with any online multiplayer game, too many players who are the lazy jobless (and by this I don't mean people who are unable to work through no fault of their own) who sit at home all day playing while my taxes pay for it.

Myself and 6 of my friends had a Counter Strike: Source night last year, lots of beer flowing, the banter was hilarious and someone resorted to throwing things at others to try to put them off... great fun, online multiplayer is so impersonal.

LAN parties FTW!

This is brilliant isn't it !...
I will most definitely be playing it for the story. I absolutely loved the campaign in KOTOR and will be playing it purely to see what the story is like. Not going to bother with dungeons...raids or any of that MMO non-sense just the story.
