Thumbs up Server Rack DIY

Server racks are very expensive.

I want to build a server rack to hold my Cisco stuff, and possibly server machines in the future. Mainly, the Cisco equipment will be for a test-bed and practice, however, I will probably use it for internet/intranet and file serving in my home. Why not, right?

Another alternative is using music equipment racks. The problem is, the affordable racks are flimsy, and the good racks are expensive. One example on Amazon:

Right now I have established this information for rack rail dimensions:

Also, I have 6 feet of angle aluminum that is one inch wide. I know I can use wood, or even the Ikea method, but I want all metal for ground integrity. I have this exact Whitmor rack on wheels, and I'm thinking about how useful it may be for framing the angle aluminum.

Has anyone else tried this sort of project and/or have advice?

You can buy rails for pretty cheap that are already drilled appropriately, then you just have to mount them about 19 inches apart and you are all set. I built rack rails right into the cabinet of my desk and keep all my rack mount audio gear in there, it's great.

Well, I went ahead and cut/drilled the angle aluminum. It is notched to sit on the shelving as support. Currently, it is supporting the 3500 XL switch and I will see how it does.

Was pretty easy to make and solid. $8.50 rack on wheels and I only use 32 inches of the 72 inch angle aluminum.

For a small amount of equipment the wire rick on casters is effective and cheap, but if you have to rack a several hundred pounds of equipment and need real server cabinets/racks for a reasonable price try finding the big electrical contractors in your area if any fair sized company is having their data center rebuilt/improved/retrofitted they'll need a commercial electrical contractor and also commercial plumbers for HVAC work. If you can finagle a company name out of a low level worker with a few free drinks you might be able to contact the company doing the data center work and buy or offer to recycle all their old cabinets for cheap or free [free if you have to pick up a bunch and dispose of any you don't need].
