PS3 + media server + metadata question

Hello all,

I was able to set up my computer as a Media Server with the help of Windows Media Player (id rather not use WMP but its the best i could come up with quickly). The PS3 is picking it up great and I can watch all of the movies that are ripped to my PC.

Navigating the menus is a ***** though and most of the navigation features on the PS3 are unused. For the meantime I resorted to playlists of TV series as well as folder navigation, but I would like to use the other navigation options.

How can I change the Metadata to my media files in a way that the PS3 agrees with? details like "Series" are not available when editing the details of individual files.

I would like to keep these files on the PC as a Server and not copy them to the PS3.

PS3 Media Server works great for streaming media from PC\Server to PS3. I use PS3 media server for years before I switched my server OS from WHS v1 to WHS v2. I now use Serviio media server. Serviio is very easy to use. I have looked for better media servers and have not found any better for free. As long as you stream to your PS3 you will be forced to use the ****ty PS3 navigation. I’m not sure if the PS3 will support externally stored Metadata. I have never used anything but cover art for my media. Serviio will show cover art from imdb.

I use Universal Media Server (Essentially, the same as PS3 media server) on my server.
Navigating is a pain at times, but as long as you keep your folders organized, everything's easy to find.

PS3 media server is great as it does on the fly transcoding. The PS3 can't play a bunch of files (especially MKV, which a quarter of my videos were). You can also set it to read off of your iTunes library !

I've had no problems, other then the fact that the PS3 has Wireless G so it couldn't stream HD content... Ethernet cable fixed that rightup!

@apw63, this is the first time I've heard of Serviio media server, what made you switch to it from PS3 media server?

I switched because I swiched the OS on my server from WHS v1 to WHS v2. I could not get PS3 media server to work with WHS v2. So I searched the web and found serviio. If you have a smart TV that allows media streaming. You can stream straight from PC to TV with serviio. Friend of mine streams straight to his Sony Bravia.
