I have a pair of 64GB Sandforce 1222 drives running RAID0. It was quite a challenge getting them to run on my Rampage Formula motherboard. I had to find a custom BIOS for it to get RAID working reliably with the SSDs.
I plan on getting a ~120GB SSD for my notebook too. |

I don't see why anyone with a "fast rig" would be without a SSD. I couldn't imagine going back, even my laptop has a SSD in one bay and a HDD in the other. I made the swtich in 2009 and haven't had a single thing to complain about.

I think the speed gained from a SSD is far more apparent in a laptop than a desktop. Low power chipsets + low power hard drives. It's the weak spot of laptops.

The floods in Thailand were unfortunate for all, but they could not have come at a more opportune time for the SSD market. It recruited a lot of people who would otherwise have been content with a HDD. It's like having an ice maker in your fridge, as small a thing as it is, once you have one, you don't ever want to go back.

I have a 120GB intel 520 SSD in my desktop and an 80GB intel x25m G1 in my laptop. Probably the best upgrade I've bought for my computer.

I got an SSD with my new PC a few months ago. But to be honest I don't notice a lot of difference from it.
I have plenty of RAM so the pagefile isn't an issue (which I moved to the HDD in any case). Most of my games are on the HDD (and they are too big to fit more than a couple on the SSD anyway). And the only other applications I use are office, web browsing and playing videos - I can't notice much difference doing this. So all I'm left with is a machine which boots up rather quicker. It's nice, but not something I would pay a lot for. |

OCZ RevoDrive x2 360gig. It's basically 4 80gig drives in a 0 stripe in a single PCI-x slot.

The problem with PCI-x, the speed was limited to the slowest card in the slots, it only lasted a short period of time between PCI and the development of PCIe cards, had a bit to do with PCI-x and scuzzy raid set-ups, late nineties or early 2000's.

The other big problem with PCI-X was that it was a 64bit parallel bus, which made it big, expensive, and very much prone to noise. Speed wise it was about equivalent to a 4x slot of PCI-e 1.0. Except it was (significantly) bigger than a PCI-e 16x slot.

Just put in my Crucial M4 yesterday that I've had probably for a year or more. Definitely worth it!
