Start it using Terminal...
I had no issues folding SMP on my Hackintosh a few years ago. But Im pretty sure I wa using Terminal to fire it up. |

Is it an iMac or a Macbook? Either way I don't think that you should be folding 24/7 on one of those for thermal reasons.
