Is it worth it?

I currently have a Zalman 9500 I picked up a couple of years ago for a song.

It has served me fine but I am thinking a newer gen cooler is in the offing.

I can get a Noctura D14 for about 60 quid ($100?) over here.

The question is, whilst it is obviously going to be better, is the improvement going to be significant enough to warrant the cash? I don't want to fork out that sort of wedge for 1 or 2 degrees....I would rather spend it on beer and curry.

Regards

What CPU do you currently have and what's the OC?

I'd just save the $, the difference isn't going to be night and day.

Agreed. For the record, a 212+ will get you better temps than that 9500. Roughly $25 here.

My current box

Cooler Master ATCS 840
ASUS M4A77TD
AMD Phenom 965BE (running at 3.870)
Zalman 9500 (next thing to change, me thinks...)
16 gig Corsair Vengance 1600
ASUS Radeon 6770
Antec True power 650 watt PSU
OCZ 128 gig SSD
2 other HDDs
Windows 7 64bit Ultimate

The case is huooj and has lots of fannage (made up word). CPU doesn't go above 55 under full load (OCCT).

Given the advice I think I will save my cash, leave it a while and then pick up a second hand bargain off fleabay.

I now have money for a curry... Chicken Tikka Goa anyone?

Thank you

Additional Comment:

Managed to pick up a 4 week old Frio Extreme for 30 quid...sorted...

I'd say spend the money on a bigger graphics card! Maybe a 7770 GHz edition? it's about 30% faster than your current card.

That's a good shout. My boy is running a 4760 that needs upgrading so I am thinking of getting a new one for me and giving him mine. The only thing holding me back (apart from the cash!) is that there is a new slot coming out soon...might be an opertunity for a bargain...

Sorry if I come across as a miser, if I only had to keep one PC up to date then it would be the dog's bollocks of a machine but unfortunately I have a wife and two kids which means they need upgrades too! It's a nightmare!!
My poor, deprived daughter is running an Athlon....

And then there are the mobile 'phones.....four bills a month just for them!

Still hopefully they will look after me when I am old and senile (sometime next week at this rate!)

Just make sure it has a decent internet connection and a liberal attitude to beer.
