DFI mobo 400mhz Celeron Processor Via Apollo Pro chipset, 128meg of 133mhz Kingston Ram ATI Xpert128 (AGP 2x, 16meg, 75/125 mhz) 20gig Maxtor Ata133 7200rpm Sound Blaster 16 (yes it's OLD) PS2 Optical mouse (microsoft) PS2 Logitech Keyboard Phillips Moniter (EVGA, Cant remember name) 16x10x40 CD-RW (LG, 8160-B) ESS ES56P-T 56k Modem Compaq Netelligent 10/100 NIC Ok, And heres the problem, It's randomly going black screen, (The moniter goes to sleep, And I'm pretty sure it's freezing in the background, Theres some wierd things though, I can copy 7 gig of movies to my hard drive, watch a 1/2 hour of tomb raider from my HDD, and A beutiful mind from a VCD, I can word process, I can use the net, But whenever I try to play a game, It locks up, I played 20 minutes of Half-Life, a little while of earth2150, Some Rainbow 6, (Never even got to a mission, It freezes at the planning stage) And during all of them, The screen goes black, (Usually) the Music stops, and for all intents and purposes, my computer looks and acts like it's off, or suspended, It doesnt respond to the keyboard/mouse, it powers down the drives and moniter, but it stays powered on, Also, It Freezes when Sisoft Sandra try's to access the Proc/Bios info, and whenever I try to Defrag?! So, I have checked the PM settings, I've tried different RAM, I've updated the drivers on my video card, I've formatted and reinstalled windows 98. And the biggest **** OFF is that it works perfectly in Linux, It does graphics fine, It does heavy processing (Kernel Compiles, FSCK, ping -f) fine, (I'd use ONLY linux, except that It doesnt work with my modem, and I like the games on it) When my Kernel Boots, it mentions "Activating Workaround ISA DMA hangs" Could that be the problem? It's very inconstant with windows, It plays music fine, The sound from games and movies is fine, And my sound blaster is the only ISA card in there, And yes it's using DMA, but theres no consistency to the problem, It appears to have nothing to do with the sound?? Please help!!! I'm ready to drop kick my computer out a window!! |

Could possibly be your Ancient ISA Sound card crapping out... Try removing it, and then do some things that would normally cause it to crash.
Although the Defrag crashes should have nothing to do with it... Unless it's scanning all DMA devices before it starts the defrag. Maybe? |

It sounds like the graphics card to me mainly because his monitor goes to sleep but the computer still runs. Update your drivers and check the sound harware after that. Sounds like something is defective
