Perpendicular storage is HERE! Bad news is notebooks get it FIRST!
"To compare: Seagate 5400.2 model HDD using parallel bit recording: 91Gbit/square inch Seagate 5400.3 model HDD using perpendicular recording: 135Gbit/square inch With superior areal densities, perpendicular technology is clearly the next-generation hard drive recording standard. In future desktop models, manufacturers are expecting upwards of 1 terabyte capacities to approach in a 3.5" drive." A 48% performance increase over one of the most advanced parallel laptop drives! And it could get better! 1TB 3.5 drives! "Currently, perpendicular technology will only be offered in Seagate's Momentus 5400.3 160GB model, but the company plans to transition all models and release drives ranging from 40GB to 160GB capacities in 20GB increments by the end of March. Seagate also indicates that by June, it will have perpendicular SATA notebook drives as well. Although Seagate did not specifically indicate when desktop drives will make the transition, it did say that we can expect perpendicular desktop drives to arrive later in 2006." This year! I read this information in a magazine a while back. You can read about the drives on seagate's website:
http://www.seagate.com/cda/newsinfo/...1,2934,00.html and http://www.seagate.com/products/notebook/momentus.html Basically as we all know, to increase storage capacity HD manufacturers constantly increase the density of how the info is written on each platter. Unfortunatly they seemed to be coming to a pleatu so this is the next logical step, stacking the bits vertically in addition to horzontially. |

Maybe I'm missing something, but I thought Hitachi came out with this a year or so ago? Check this animation out on it. "Get Perpendicular"

Yeah this is an old story. Toshiba was the first out with it and they put it in one a MP3 Player.

Hitachi might have invented it before, but do they currently use it in any consumer hard drives?
Regardless, this technology is going to be great. Adding more capacity and even improving seek time & throughput! |

What the heck? Notebook users need it the most. Even though I have 2gb ram, 40gb 7200rpm 8mb hard drive in my laptop, I still wait longer than most people to get into a BF2 game. I think us laptop users need this the most.
Even the 7200rpm drives aren't close to as snappy as desktop equivalents. |
