4 million+ AMD powered laptops for OLPC already commited.

Quote:
REPORTS ARE EMERGING that the OLPC project has already had commitments from four developing countries to take 1 million each of the Linux-based laptops with AMD chips.

According to DesktopLinux, OLPC's director for the Middle East and Africa, Khaled Hassouah, has confirmed that Nigeria, Brazil, Argentina and Thailand are the first countries to sign up to the project, although the terms of the deal are not yet finalised.

Red Hat, which is providing the operating system software for the project, is hoping that getting millions more Linux-based PCs out into the world will help drive the OS out of the world of servers and onto your desktop, through getting people used to the system, and encouraging developers.

That is a crapload of Geode processors...

Pretty interesting stuff though, nice of AMD, RedHat, and other participants to step up and bring affordable technology to the rest of the world. Sometimes it's easy to forget how fortunate we are to have $2000+ computers, when most of the world doesn't even have a PC.
