Phenom II 545 Could use some help!!
First off, I'm totally new to the overclocking thing. I just bought a Phenom II x2 545 with an Asus 785 MB. Well for starters, it seems that I have the one "dud" that can unlock all the other cores. My guess is that I have a failed Quad that's officially a dual only... Does that make sense? I've tried enabling ACC to "auto" but I can't seem to get the other cores unlocked. As of right now, a simple overclocking has netted me 3.17ghz, which I know is like nothing. The only thing I've really touched in BIOS was the CPU/HT Reference Clock changing it from 200-211. Also, I bought DDR2 1066 memory, however the MB picks it up as 800. Now, I know that I can go into BIOS and change it manually, which I have tried. I would change it to 533, but it seems that Windows XP SP3 doesnt like to boot up for some reason. Is there something else I have to do here? Do I have to change the voltage on the RAM? I installed CPU-Z to get a better look at the whole picture. Right now Core Speed: 3165 mhz Bus speed 211 mhz HT Link 2110 mhz Core Voltage: 1.3v Memory timings: 5-5-5-18-24-2t Memory Voltage: 1.8v DDR2 DRAM Freq: 422 mhz (I think as a result of increasing the CPU/HT reference clock) FSB RAM ratio: 1:2Sorry for being such a newb. I've tried reading the How-to-overclock threads, but all of the information is too technical to me. If there is anyone who can give me an easier explanation as to what values I should be inputting and what not, that would be great. I'd like to get this guy running well. Oh here's another little tidbit, I'm still using an older HD that uses an IDE connection.. could this possibly be of hinderance? Thanks in advance! |

I'm not that experienced with overclocking AMD's, so I will leave that up to someone else to explain.

Also, what are your current CPU temperatures at idle and load? |

Make sure you are using the memory rated timings and voltage when setting to 533. Most DDR2 needs 2.1v+ to run at that speed.

OK, so right now, Im running at 3.3Ghz using BIOS overclocking profile of 10%..
Also, the tools that were provided by Asus for reading temperatures seems to have been disabled due to the overclocking.. Can you suggest another program that will read temperatures and such? CPU-Z doesnt seem to have temperature readings Also, I THINK the memory is using the timings.. is there a way to check this through BIOS? THanks again! Additional Comment: Hey guys, would an IDE hard drive cause issues with drr2 1066 RAM? for some reason, when i change all the timings to 5-5-5-15, 533mhz, and raise the voltage up to 2.2v, my windows wont boot, it will go to this screen that says, "windows system file corrupt or missing, please press "R" to repair at first screen" This is at all stock CPU settings, nothing overclocked. Then i drop everythingg back down to auto settings for memory, and it starts back up again fine.. What in the world is up with that? Is that the IDE being too slow?? THanks Last edited by Screwby25 : 11-10-2009 at 02:56 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost |

The system on auto is booting 800mhz (RAM) by default. You lower this speed in the bios as well as the HT and NB after they reach 200 - 400mhz on stock voltage.
So try 667 and the NB/HT at 1800mhz. When you raise the FSB speed those lowered speeds will increase. You can use HWMonitor and CPU-Z. These 2 programs will have just about everything you need. |

Ah, well I'm having absolutely no luck with the RAM at all.. I left everything at stock speeds, and just adjusted the RAM settings, but either windows wont boot, or the system wont boot at all... I may have some faulty memory here. On the flipside, I think I may have successfully overclocked it stable to 3.6ghz.
I'm aware that AMD states their Max temps for this processor is 70C, but I've seen many people get it to operate/prefer it to be around 55 MAX.. I've only run prime95 for about an hour now, and so far its been at 58c max.. I plan on running it over night, and I'm hoping that the temps dont go any higher. My voltage is wandering back and forth between 1.344v-1.392v.. I've even set load line calibrations to 25%. but it still seems to fluctuate.. Is this fluctuation normal? I have it set to 1.375v in the BIOS. As I am typing this, temps are going back and forth between 57-58c for the most part, and not rising. I guess my question is, is 58C max acceptable? Or should I look to achieve lower temps? Thanks |
