Subpar raptor performance?
BIOS 1004 on the P5K-E Wifi Not sure if chipset drivers were installed correctly. The motherboard driver install disc wasn't compatible with Windows 7 so I downloaded the driver from Asus's support site for the motherboard and went through it's setup. Moments after it completed it said it might not have been installed properly and I attempted to redo it. Thoughts? Last edited by Mastericy : 11-06-2009 at 04:58 AM. |

With a graph like that I would back up that drive immediately before it kicks the bucket completely ...
Then again, was it working properly before the Windows 7 install? Were any programs accessing the HDD during the test? |

Almost no programs were running... I didn't run a HD Tune directly before the Windows 7 install, either.
I've run HD Tune a few times now and the Max is always 84.8MB/s |

you know a lot for a 5 year old
![]() before running hdtune, look closely at the hdd led on your pc. if it is blinking every now and then then you know it's another program accessing your drive. you could also download filemon to check which programs are currently accessing what on your disk. |

The hard drive activity light is/was not blinking before/after the test started/stopped(the light does work btw).
Not to mention: the Raptors are loud; it's audible while being accessed. |

do you see anything suspicious in the "health" tab in hdtune?

It checked out ok in the health tab. I seriously think it's a driver or maybe even a cable. My evidence is that it isn't completely sporadic performance. The max is 84.8 MB/s in every test. Also, the performance in Windows and game loading times seems to be fine. I ran the test after reading a thread and noticed the performance isn't what it was a year-or-so ago(and subpar to other single, slower drives).
EDIT: Could it be a bad format? Bad partition, etc.. Update: I plugged a different SATA cable into a different port on the motherboard and Reformatted to XP Pro. I flashed the BIOS to the most-recent update. I installed all the updates and drivers(without error this time) and still max at 84.8 MB/s. What's the deal? |

the mbps throughput is not the part where the raptor really shines (however I would have expected about 100MB/s), but in access time.

Raptors have a better seek time compared to the write times. Id say the 84.8MB/s you are getting are about right for one drive.
WD Blacks are faster than Velociraptors transfer-rate wise, I believe. |

This is the older raptor right? Those number sadly enough look normal. You're running a drive that 3+ years old. Probably older.
