Question Craigslist selling HELP [SOLVED]

I am selling my acer aspire and i got a hit on craigslist. I put it up for $325 figuring they would try to get the price down and all i really want out of it is $300. I got an email after 36 hours of the posting except the lady lives in NY and i live in KS.

here is her response to me after i confirmed that it was still for sale:

Quote:
I really appreciate your response.I am located in Remsenburg city,NY.
I really need to buy this and send to my
son schooling outside the state.I have been trying to
buy this on ebay but its so very stressful buying on ebay.I would not
want to loose out this opportunity so i will like to make you an offer
of $370 so as to wrap up the sale.I will be paying through PAYPAL
because i have a verified account with paypal. So
kindly get back with your paypal email address so i can make payment
into your paypal account.Once payment clears, shipment will be handled
by me through my personal fedex account,so you dont have to pay for
shipment.Get back to me if my approval is granted.I would like to see more
the pictures please.
do you guys think i should or should not go through with this? I really want to because i could get the netbook i wanted and possibly a new hdd that i also want. and 370 is well over what its worth but she offered it not me.

Sounds fishy that she offers 370 and she pays for the shipping.

I only deal locally on craigslist, but that's my preference. CL usually is the home of the sketchiest people around.

Especially here in NYC. There are so many scams its not funny. I made a couple of deals that went well and I've also been involved in a couple that made me fearful for my safety. A few seemed sketchy beforehand so a brought a couple of friends to the exchange or backed out.

Why the he77 bother to post if for sale on the internet, if you are afraid of an internet sale!

She is paying you first, where is your risk?

I had something like this happen to me, the person claimed to be using paypal and sent a fake paypal invoice that looked pretty legitimate in an attempt to get me to send the item. This looks exactly like what I dealt with.

hopeless, completely hopeless...

Can anyone tell me the risk?

You get her money, you don't ship. She is defrauded, not you.

She never sends the money. You never ship. No deal, but no actual hard monetary loss.

If it is PayPal you are afraid of,
have her pay with MoneyGram or Western Union, deducting the cost from your net.

And she claims that she never received the product, reports it to Paypal and Paypal takes the money from your Paypal account. If the money is already moved from your Paypal account to you checking account Paypal just takes it from your checking account.

With that being said, I have never had any problems using Paypal whether sending or receiving a payment.

Better yet, have her send a USPS money order. Those are pretty hard to fake unless you are a professional.

alright alright i think i have heard enough and you guys have but enough doubt in my mind to pass up this opportunity. i would have liked the extra cash but it is not worth the possibility of a huge headache and getting pwn'd like a noob on the internets.

thanks for all the replies guys really helpful insight and ideas you have seen or heard about frauds.

No, I often use one of the corporate accounts for shipping, that way I control the type, cost, insurance & have guaranteed tracking.

The only thing I can think of is a PayPal charge back where she swears it was never shipped, but that is easily handled either by documentation or much better have her pay through Money Gram or Western Union & the seller eats the cost.

Looks like every other paypal scam I've ever seen. They send you the money you send it, they report fraud to paypal and get their money back (paypal will steal it right from your checking account). They now have the laptop and their money and try to convince paypal you're not the scammer

Unbelievable!
Dave, no one with a legitimate desire to purchase is going to offer more money than for what you have an item listed. These same scams pop up over and over again.

I will take your word for it.

If the buyer is willing to pay prior to shipping, why not eliminate the PayPal concerns & just have them pay with MoneyGram or Western Union?

Of course the seller would be expected to eat the cost as they are the ones requesting this.
