What's the best digital camera for under $550

I am a total beginner when comes to camera. Would anyone recommend the best digital camera for under $550-$650. (Must support HD images)

I would go for something like the Nikon D40 or D3000. The D3000 is several years newer, but Ken Rockwell did not like the D3000 much. Since you are a total beginner the cons that Rockwell point out won't matter to you much, if at all.

The D40 retails for right at $500 and the D3000 for $550, but you can get both for less if you shop around.

I'll start using the Nikon D700 at work in the next few months.

I still have much to learn about my DSLR, but I can't imagine going back to point-and-shoot. And maybe it's just that I'm accustomed to my camera, but I prefer Canon to Nikon. Much better feel to it IMO.

Additional Comment:

I'm not sure about prices, but I've heard many good things about the Rebel XSi. Many good things.

I'm a Canon man. I'd always suggest Canon over Nikon - no reason than because I like Canon.

Canon XSI does have 12.2 megapixel + live view. But Nikon D3000 is a newer of the two.

Personally, I have always found Nikon more user friendly. With that being said, both the XSi and D3000 are geared towards beginners with only a few differences:

As far as Live View goes.. you are choosing a DSLR not a Point-and-Shoot. I have never used Live View when shooting with a DSLR.

Live view is a gimmick. I hate that they're including it on dSLR level cameras. Christ - even the 5D Mk. II has it!

Live view has its place, not a gimmick. Best use is for sharp manual focus at very narrow aperatures. Go to live view, zoom, focus, shoot.
You can pick up a used 40D for around $500-600 at fredmiranda.com or POTN.
The lenses are what will add to your cost over the body that you dont have to worry about with P&S cameras. Once you have gone to DSLR and become accustomed to them you will never go back. I keep a Sony around for those trips to the amusment park where you dont want to lug a DSLR around, not to mention attempt to snap a shot on a roller coaster with.

I too like Canon just because of the glass.

Go to a store and try the two out and see which one you like better.

Rather than paying for it new, buy used and your money will go a lot farther. I would think about getting a d40 plus 35mm f1.8 DX which should run you a little under $500. Or you could get a D80 with a 50 f1.8 for under 650. (I think) If you step up to the D80 you will have much more options for lenses and wont be limited to just AF-S glass.

I'm not to familiar with Canon so someone else might be able to recommend something.

Something that I just saw in the B&S on fredmiranda.

"I have a like new Nikon D40 with the 18-55 kit lens and all original boxes plus;

Nikon 55-200 f/4-5.6 ED AF-S VR DX zoom (Very rarely used)

Nikon SB40 speedlight (never used)

all in mint cond. Less than 500 actuations on the camera.

I am looking for the Olympus EP-1 in white preferably or the Panasonic Lumix GF-1 plus cash.

Thanks ( I would consider selling the above package for $ 575)"

Sweet! My stepdad wants to get us a really nice one for our wedding. Subscribed.

We have crappy Nikon Coolpix L1 and L5. Takes like 4 sec. to take a picture.
