getting back into folding :)

I stopped folding about 1.5 yrs ago or so. I might get back into folding, now that my life is more stable. However, I need a q8400s or q8200s before I start folding again, lol. Or really any of the lga775 cpu's that are the "low power" 65watt ones, lol.

Also, are the smp units still all jacked up and require a login and whatever else it used to require? Do they still only use two cores, or can they use more now? Anything else I should know?

AMD has a couple of 65W quad cores out. I have a 905e nice CPU, runs cool [under 50 degrees Celsius when runns the SMP folding client] price went up 30 bones since I bought mine though.

If you have the money, i7 bigadv WUs is where its at. Bigadv on a 4ghz i7 920 do roughly 20k PPD. Seriously, you only need 1 i7 rig to do what 2-3 video cards can do.

I'm actually deciding if I want to take the plunge back into folding. I noticed my position has been slipping. I'm not even sure what is going on. I plan to check out the foldingforum but I'm just looking for what's best for my single rig. I just have my single quad X3210 @ 3.6ghz and a 9800GX2. I was going to resume running 2 SMP and 2 GPU but if there is something better for me to run let me know.

What you have will produce itro 10>11 ppd without tweaking anything on the gpu's
and the quad on notfreds vm will produce itro 4.5>5k ppd

so 14.5>16k ppd all together

Alright that sounds pretty good then. I just missed being in the fold and being on the forum. Not sure how long I'll be able to keep it going as far as money concerns but I really enjoy it.

I'm doing 5000 PPD on a q6600 @ 3.0 under VM with a GTX 295 ( shaders to 1404 ) running GPU2 eeking out about 8700 PPD per core with 191.07 drivers.

That is about as much a highly-clocked i7 920 will put out under bigadv once you qualify for the bonus. I'm waiting to see what i9 has to offer before I start selling rigs. i7 is still kind-of expensive compared to s775 but at least the memory has come down a lot.

Librarian... I don't think a dying DVD will cause a system to lock-up unless, maybe, you are actually using it at the time. The Event Viewer might give you a clue as to what is going on or you can just dis-connect the DVD and see if you still get lock-ups.

Don't ask why unless you want to join them.
impressive jevans, what are your 920s clocked to?

Additional Comment:

Weird... I am not getting credit for any of my smp units... I submitted three in the last 24 hours....none gave me credit, I copy/pasted my passkey too...
All my points are from gpu units.

Actually. I don't have any 920's. I just have 6 Quads, a Duo, and 7 GPUs folding.

I have my VM and SMP clients folding for EOC and the GPUs are folding for eVGA at the moment. I'll switch the GPUs back to EOC in about 4 days after I pick up the $100 eVGA bucks for an x58 motherboard.

Make doubly sure you aren't folding for someone else. I've done that before because I made a typo when entering my F@H name.

I'm running two 920s, one at 3.8 (gonna be 4.0ghz tonight) and the other at 4ghz.

3.8 does 52,000 in about 2.5 days I think. The 4.0 does 55,500ish in 2.3 days.

Glad to see you are up and running again. I've had a few financial issues that caused me to quit for a while, but things are improving and hopefully I can keep something going.

As an old timer, do you need to be told why that's not going to be appriciated that much? I mean, you're folding for points that way, not for science. Do not double up vm's, return times are more important then just meeting deadlines, and the bigadv bonus plan is the trail to finally put that fact into something which will not encourage people to think that dual vm's are worth more/doing more work. They are not, and it's been said and proven so many times no one can uphold their 'logic' to saying dual vm's are good for the project...

Otherwise, welcome back, I always wonderd when the silent old folders would start feeling the heat from the newbs and start cranking out wu's again

You know honestly I haven't configured anything in awhile. Back when I had first started 2 SMP it used my chip at 100% vs less then that with only a single one running. I haven't tried running 1 VM since 5.92 I think. I fold because I enjoy it, points are not worth what it costs to keep it going

I have to actually stop again for a bit sadly. My UPS died and replacement was $500 lol. If anyone needs to trade in their old UPS's, APC is doing a 25% discount on any new UPS and paying to dump your old one, just for the info. Once I have battery backup again I'll get going again.

Man, APC is a great company... My APC died on me, and contacting them and doing their self tests, they determined it was bunk, and paid to ship me a new oned, AND paid to return my old one.

Yes. It is way easy now. Just install the newest VMWare 3.0 and set Notfred to run on 4 cores and let it go. Only one client needed for each quad core chip on the regular SMP units. The Windows SMP client hasn't changed and is still inefficient.

I made a step by step guide to get vmware running with notfred and fahmon/fahspy ( linked in the sticky ), if you tell me what you done so far I think I can say how to enter the correct path in hfm.net.

Infact iirc it should work if you enter the http:// adress of the client with /1 to trail. If you can acces the webinterface, click to show the folding log file, the adressbar in IE/FF now is the correct path. excluding Fahlog.txt offcourse.

Welcome back in full force I hope, and you don't 'need' ups's to fold I been doing it for some time as well and I never owned an UPS to date. Maybe not that smart, as I have lost wu's and uptime due to net issues, but for me it was never worth the investment. I been told it's much more common place in the us since your grid is less dependable, but still.. you really need the security of an UPS to fold? Or do you mean you have to get the expenses coverd somewhere first and f@h is the start of that? Either way, like I said, I been waiting on the 'resurrection' of some of you

When you do your add client setup did you check the little box marked " this client is a Virtual Machine... "

Your log file is going to be in...

My Network Places / Entire Network / Diskless / Fold-xxxx / etc / folding / 1

where xxxx is whatever Notfred assigned to your VM.

You MIGHT also see listings pertaining to the samba client and will be something like...

My Network Places / c on Samba 3.0.27a ( Fold-xxxx ) / etc / folding / 1
