Installing and Configuring F@H as a Service
I now run the console as a service because it stays out of the way, doesn't require addtional stuff like trayit, and it runs for all users. I've been using the blue tentacle GUI based service installer and had great success. If you set the flags during the install, there is no need to configure the service later, either in the registry or with a diff utility. Here is the link to download the GUI installer for running FAH as a service: http://www.bluetentacle.co.uk/dc/fahservice.htm Here are the instructions you will see: "GUI version Installation instructions: 1. Download the GUI based F@H4 Service installer package 2. Extract the package to a temporary installation folder Note: Do not use an existing F@H4 client install folder as this will cause an error when running the service installer 3. Download F@H4Console.exe from the Stanford folding website and place it in the temporary installation directory 4. Run servicegui.exe 5. Either use the default values for installing the service or choose your own 6. Select the 'Configure client' button and enter your username and team number (Team Egg Roll is team #14) 7. Enter the proxy information, if required and click 'OK' 8. Click the install button and the F@H4 client will then be installed and automatically started" Here is a step by step with screens: First uninstall your current client. If you are running the GUI client there is an uninstall shortcut in your start menu or you can use Add/Remove programs. If you have been using the text console I believe you can just delete the directory. Be sure to check your startup folder and delete any shortcuts to launch FAH. Then follow the directions above. Make sure that F@H4Console.exe is in the same folder as servicegui.exe. Here are the screens: When you run servicegui.exe you get: Fill it out, click on "configure client" and you get: ![]() Enter your user name and the correct team 11314 Check Folding@Home Click "OK" Click "Install" Reboot Check FAHlog.txt to make sure its running right. Should you want to uninstall the service, run remove_service.cmd in the fah directory. If you don't know already you can manage your services with Start>Settings>Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services You can use the services manager to start, stop and change options for all services on your machine. I have only tried this on XP and 2000 so far so let me know if there are issues with other OSs Last edited by Hack99 : 04-19-2004 at 12:33 PM. |

Will it autosend when they finally decide to dial in? Or do they have to manually send it in or something?

yeah they'll notice eventually that the cpu usage is at 100% all the time. put it on your order sheet or something. hand out pamphlets to the ppl if they ask.

My computer is no longer running F@H as a service. I don't know why since it was working for a few days and then stopped. Aroudn the time that it stopped I installed Norton System Works 2004. It could have cleaned out the service regisrty. Anyone have an idea?

norton system works blocks f@h from sending/recieving work i think you might need to specify that the folding exe is allowed to send/recieve info to the internet
