Best & Cheapest 3-4TB HD for a 12-24TB RAID-6?

I'm building a MediaServer for all my CD's, DVD's, BluRay's & Family Pictures & Movies, and will use a Adaptec 6805 (8-port) Controller with 6-8 disc's in RAID-6, but I don't know which HD to use! I have read that WD's Greens are no good in RAID, but what about the the new WD Red's (should be build for NAS/RAID)? or will Seagate's 7200.14 (Barracuda) be better?

Any input is welcome!

WD Reds should be very good for your setup, but they do cost considerably more than the WD Greens for example. They would be your best option though - other thoughts, Hitachi's low RPM 3TB drives.

4TB drives are still too expensive, meaining you get more GB for the $ with 3TB.

Fyi I just ordered 2x 3TB WD Red's for my NAS, should be arriving soon. In theory they should be awesome, more warranty, 24/7 use, only 3 platters, cooler, quieter, less power consumption...

Those reds sound ok, but then I've never had problems with greens either, the 2TB's are 40 bucks dearer so I'll stick with the greens. Hey man what happened to the land of Odanez and all these Avatar changes, you must be having a identity crisis. Ha Ha.

But will the greens work well in raid?

"Land of Odanez" is what zult always said, but since she has not shown her face here in like years, I decided I will be a bit more accurate on my location

Reason for avatar changes can be found here http://forums.extremeoverclocking.co...d.php?t=364721

edit: Another thought: The WD30EURS (AV-GP series) can be had here for just a few $ more than the WD greens - think they are better for a raid environment?

I don't run raid for storage, I would probably use better drives if I did, sadly they are $40 bucks dearer in Aussie, that's at 2TB, the 512gb M4 I was going to get with a couple of 2TB drives is out of stock until the end of the month, I'll re-check the prices then, I would certainly opt for red drives if the difference was only dollars, but not at 40 per drive.

Just joking about the changes, suppose I'll do the same one day.

I would agree with Ordanez - The Red series from WD are good for NAS/RAID setups as they are spec'd for 24/7 use.

otherwise I always suggest enterprise drives (with TLER) but these are shockingly more expensive for the average user.

I myself will be dropping three of the 2TB Reds in my linux box for ZFS Raid sometime soon.
