EOC Folding@Home Team

Our goal: to understand protein folding, protein aggregation, and related diseases

What are proteins and why do they "fold"? Proteins are biology's workhorses -- its "nanomachines." Before proteins can carry out their biochemical function, they remarkably assemble themselves, or "fold." The process of protein folding, while critical and fundamental to virtually all of biology, remains a mystery. Moreover, perhaps not surprisingly, when proteins do not fold correctly (i.e. "misfold"), there can be serious effects, including many well known diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, and Parkinson's disease.

What does Folding@Home do? Folding@Home is a distributed computing project which studies protein folding, misfolding, aggregation, and related diseases. We use novel computational methods and large scale distributed computing, to simulate timescales thousands to millions of times longer than previously acheived. This has allowed us to simulate folding for the first time, and to now direct our approach to examine folding related disease

How can you help? You can help our project by downloading and running our client software. Our algorithms are designed such that for every computer that joins the project, we get a commensurate increase in simulation speed.

What have we done so far? We have had several successes. You can read about them on our Science page, Results section, or go directly to our press and papers page.

Performance hits when using folding at home can be seen here
This will show you that there is no affect on the system when using folding at home. Now you have no excusses not to Join the team Thanx to Limpyloco for suggesting this be added to the thread

i was gonna set up my old comp to run folding@home all the time, but my friend might be buying it, if he doesn't, i'll set it up in my brothers room (hes off to college, so i can use his port on the router) and let that run all day, if i keep the same name on it, but on the same team they will both add to each other?

i was just thinking, well, i thought about this a while ago, but this brought it back up....anyways, our school has 5 400mhz dells in every classroom, and we have like 150 classrooms, and a few comp labs w/at least 30 in each room, they have this thing where when the comp restarts, it loads an image off the network and puts everything back to the way it was, so if u install a game, its gone when u restart....anyways, i was just thinking about how much proccessing power that is added up, i wish i could go and change that image, that would be awesome

lol, i'll give it a try, heh, they keep the stuff visible on the network, so if i could find a way to leave a comp on overnight and download the image from home to there, then edit it, put it on a cd and bring back to school, the hard part would be replacing, lol, i'll use my 1337 H4x0|2 5k|LL5 for that part, lol
