Thinking about getting back in the game....

So I've been offline for a long while, but outta boredom fired up F@H on a work PC the other day. It's been chugging along and I'm getting the itch again. See if I can catch JMossman sooner that 1.7 months.

I'm looking for info on the best bang for the buck setups? Was thinking about looking into getting a GPU off CL for cheap and popping it into this PC, but does it still matter whether it's Windows or Linux anymore?

Appreciate any insight.

GPU folding is best bang for the buck, by orders of magnitude (my i5 2500k only produces 15-18k ppd, i7 4790 only ~22-27k ppd). Pick up either a used 970 (~325-350k ppd) or a 980 (~400-450k ppd) and that'll get you going. These ppd estimates assume Windows and can vary depending on work unit, overclocking, etc.

Linux gives you slightly higher PPD but for me wasn't worth the hassle. I was successful installing Linux but not the Linux nvidia driver. Too much witchcraft involved and I just don't have the time to learn. I think Linux gives you ~10% more ppd?

If you're going to run 24x7 and buy a used gpu, it's best to replace the thermal paste so you have a known paste starting point.

Also if you get an nvidia 9xx series on windows, install driver 372.70, not the latest. Skim the forum postings for the last 4 months for topics about drivers to see why.

I agree GPU is definitely better. You'll easily make up a couple of million in less than 1 month with faster GPUs. Just don't go too old with GPUs. They are really hot and use more power.
